She goes to the grand ball as a mouse (punishment by her fairy godmother for bad manners), and it's her kindhearted stepsister, Gertie Ugly, who marries Prince Charming after they meet at the dance. Although the story omits many aspects of Disney's Cinderella, Blanco sneaks in a few familiar scenes in his digital illustrations. Children will also enjoy seeing how Blanco changes the appearances of the Big Bad Wolf, the Wicked Queen, and the evil witches: characters who try to teach Gertie how to act more like an "Ugly." It's easy to make this book interactive by asking questions about the character crossovers or by introducing children to additional versions of the stories, which in this case include the fairy tales "Hansel and Gretel," "Snow White," and "Little Red Riding Hood." About the Author
Lorraine Carey spent her early years digging for fairies in her backyard and hoping upon hope that she'd wake up on Christmas morning to find a horse behind the couch. Lorraine Carey now lives in London with her son, Kassius; their cat, Merlin; and an amazingly invincible fish named Bob.

Migy Blanco was born in Salford, England, studied in London, and then spent ten years working in advertising and editorial illustration. After marrying, he moved to Buenos Aires, where he developed a children’s-book style that is bold, magical, and eye-catching. Very similar to the original story of Cinderella

I am a huge fan of the retelling of classic fairy tales from another character's perspective so I was very excited to read this book. It looked to be a fun mashup of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. Maybe Little Red was actually one of the step-sisters? Maybe the Fairy Godmother was actually bad and the step-sister was looking out for Cinderella the whole time? Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed.

We are introduced to the third Ugly stepsister, Gertie, and find out that she isn't very ugly after all. In fact, she is portrayed very much like the Cinderella we all know (except Cinderella is mean here). Gertie is super sweet and pretty, does all the housework, is shunned by her family, and isn't allowed to go to the ball until at the last minute she is helped by the Fairy Godmother. Sound familiar? There were a couple of nice cameos from some other fairy tale favorites (Hansel and Gretel and Snow White) but for the most part, it was too similar to the original Cinderella story.

A Different Take on a Classic Story

Most of us are familiar with some version of the story of Cinderella. However, the classic tale gets turned around and mixed up with some other fairy tales in CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF. In this story, Cinderella is not very nice and she has not two, but three stepsisters. The other two everyone has heard of before, but the third stepsister is a girl named Gertie. Gertie is not like the rest of her Ugly family (their last name really is Ugly). She's sweet, nice, and kind. She wants desperately to go to the Prince's ball, but her mother won't let her unless she learns to be as wicked and mean as the rest of the family. So, Gertie is sent from one fairy tale villain to the next in an attempt to learn how to be mean. However, Gertie just can't seem to be mean and she seems to have no way to get to the ball. Help comes in an unexpected companion. CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF has several cameos from other fairy tale characters. The story isn't as in-depth as other mashups and some readers might not like that. However, it's cute and has a certain charm and most children will probably enjoy reading it (or having it read to them).

My kids love this book! We checked it out from the library and the kids wanted to read it every night. After we checked it out a second time my kids kept asking about it so I just decided to add it to our library. It's our new favorite.

About the Author
After a long and distinguished career, Louis E. "Gene" Boone passed away just before the publication of the Thirteenth Edition of CONTEMPORARY MARKETING. Over the years, students and colleagues at the University of Tulsa, the University of South Alabama, and other schools in the U.S., Australia, and Europe were fortunate to be influenced by Gene's insights. Many marketing instructors knew Gene through his distinguished career and remember the numerous contributions he made to business education. Gene was a pioneer of the marketing discipline and arguably the best and most creative business writer of his generation.

David L. Kurtz has taught at a number of major U.S. and foreign universities, and collaborated on writing best-selling books with Louis E. Boone. Their publications have been translated into Chinese, French, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish. Dave has lectured extensively throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Dave attended Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia for four years, and was then accepted by the graduate business school at the University of Arkansas, where he met Gene Boone. Professors or administrators, please do not make your students purchase this textbook. It is a waste of time.

I would like to preface that my rating of this book does not coincide with my grade (an A), nor does it coincide with the quality of the professor (who I thought was very interesting as she brought many concepts of the workplace with her).

I purchased this textbook (used, thankfully) for a semester of Marketing. I hoped that the book would give unique perspectives to the world of marketing, or at least give the reader a feel for it. Instead, I received a book about VERY basic marketing practices that was loaded with fluff and unnecessary pages.

On a high level, the book is structured as you would expect a textbook to be structured - basics > specifics, however even in the later chapters there are extremely simple concepts that are too simple for a college textbook. If the authors are going over the concept of a monopoly, a concept that should be taught at latest in High School in both chapter 3 (page 66) AND chapter 18 (page 619), I'm well-inclined to think that the authors (or publisher) are adding this in just for the purposes of adding extra pages to make an extra buck.

In addition, the textbook itself has numerous examples of marketing stories that would be appropriate in the main text, but are instead added to the bottom of pages. This makes the book harder to read, as now I have to move back a few pages for something I wasn't sure was part of the text or even important in the first place.

I am giving the textbook two stars as there are some very important and current concepts covered, and there is an appendix of useful examples of "How To". That being said, I do not think it is worth the time of you or your students to use this book.

what can you say about a text book. I didn't hate it, in fact, I got a lot out of it. I found some of the assignments irritating as the companies you may be asked to research have been out of business or taken over years ago. They just need to keep up with corporate actions a little better. Other than that, the book can be pretty useful.

Great introduction to the Phenomenology of Religion for both monotheist and non-monotheist.

This is Van der Leeuw's second book in Phenomenology. First one is not available in English ("introduction to the Phenomenology").
If you are monotheist, then grab the "Religion in essence and manifestation" first. It will help you to understand Leeuw's Phenomenology in Judeo-Christian context.
If you are atheist or non-monotheist (animism or maybe Buddhism?), I recommend this book to research into the Phenomenology, then read "Religion in essence and manifestation". You will like them.

Not as complete as I expected

I was familiar with Religion in Essence and Manifestation (Princeton Legacy Library)- the Phenomenology of Religion, and thought this would be an excellent addendum to it but it was not. No wonder the one was a required text for Philosophy of Religion but this one was not.

Perfect for art lovers and artists looking to learn new techniques.

What a fun book! A good friend of mine introduced me to it and I'm glad he did. I'm not an artist and don't pretend to be. My artistic talent tops out at adult cartoon holiday cards but I love art and the illustrations in this book are beautiful, especially if you appreciate figure drawing and the female form. You can tell Derek is a very talented artist and I love how he laid out his thought process and guides you through the steps he took to make these very intricate and life like illustrations. If I were a serious artist I'm sure I would gain some good knowledge and be able to follow along in his thought process from preliminary sketches to the final draft.

In my opinion, human anatomy is the most difficult kind of art to capture and to create an illustration that is perfectly life like is the ultimate sign of talent and dedication. Usually the face is "off" or the hands or body look "funny" and it just doesn't have any life but not in this book. The illustrations jump off the page and are very sexy and tasteful. I also found his commentary very personal and I love the fact that he said "I draw what I like and how I see it in my head. Art is subjective and should be personal. Who cares about what others think and do what feels right." I'm paraphrasing here but you get the idea.

All in all, a great book for art lovers and artists who want to hone their craft. I included my wife's favorite illustration. She couldn't take her eyes off her and I don't blame her one bit!

Its a great book filled with beautiful drawings

Love this book. I don't get the feeling that he is trying to hold hands here and teach you every single step of his process, but rather give you the broad strokes on a selection of his stuff and show you some options for what can be done when you mix photoshop with old fashioned drawings. The range of drawing types was also interesting as it went from very traditional figure study to some very sensual poses so there is a little something for everyone in there. The last thing I noticed was the fact that he showed his work so to speak. He showed the initial sketches, tightened sketches, and final drawings side by side for most of them. For anyone who is thinking about getting into figure drawing or people who just like really nice drawings I would strongly suggest this book.

Excellent Introductory Book - So Clear that is Suitable for Self-Study

This book is an introductory course that provides an appropriate balance between process control theory and practice. In particular it emphasizes on dynamic behavior, physical and empirical modeling, computer simulation, measurement and control technology, basic control concepts, and advanced control strategies.

The mathematical level of the book is oriented toward a junior or senior student who has taken at least one course in differential equations. Additional mathematical tools required for the analysis of control systems are introduced along the book as needed. The book emphasizes process control techniques that are used in practice and provides detailed mathematical analysis only when it is essential for understanding the material. Key theoretical concepts are illustrated with examples.

The book is divided in four parts. Part I (chapters 1 to 2) provides an introduction to process control and an in-depth discussion on process modeling. The development of dynamic models for representative processes, like a stirred-tank blending system are used as illustrative examples throughout the book.

Part II (chapters 3 to 7) is concerned with the analysis of the dynamic behavior of processes. A key issue is the determination of the transient response that occurs after a process disturbance occur, a grade change is initiated, or a process is started up or shut-down. Important analysis toll are introduced, the Laplace transform and the transfer function. For many practical control applications, it is not feasible to develop a physically based, dynamic model. For this the important topic of empirical models and their development from plant and process data are presented. Both continuous-time and discrete-time models are considered here.

Part III (chapters 8 to 15) addresses the fundamental concepts of feedback and feedforward control. The topics included the PID controller and an overview of the process instrumentation and control hardware and software that are necessary to implement process control, The important relationship between process design and process control is emphasized, and a whole section is dedicated to process safety. The design and analysis of feedback control systems, as well as new methods for controller design, tuning, and troubleshooting receive considerable attention. This part concludes with a chapter on feedforward and ratio control.

Part IV (chapters 16 to 24) is concerned with advanced process control techniques. The topics include digital control, multivariable control and enhancements of PID control, such as cascade control, selective control, and gain scheduling. Powerful techniques like real time optimization and model predictive control (MPC) that have had significant impact on industrial practice are covered on dedicated and separated chapters. Also process monitoring, batch processes control, and plant-wide control are also developed on individual chapters. Illustrative case studies are included in this part of the book.

Even though the book is designed for Chemical Engineering students, I truly believe that this text would also be suitable for industrial practitioners and students in mechanical, industrial, and electrical engineering. I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control who has been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. My academic background is in electrical and electronics engineering (I am an Electronic Engineer), not in chemical engineering as might be the case of the usual reader of this book, but working in the Oil & Gas Industry all this time, I have been dealing with Chemical-Process Control issues in a day-to-day basics. I found this book to be a very useful reference and refresher to gain a better understanding of Modern Process Control Applications.

The book is organized in reasonable short chapters what makes it more readable and modular, which makes it also suitable for self-study by engineers in industry.

A beautifully written, immaculate textbook

Process dynamics and control is a vast subject, profoundly important for maximizing value in plant operations, but unfortunately often neglected by undergraduate students. This book by three of the most illustrious professors of chemical engineering distills their expertise and wisdom, as teachers with about 100 years combined teaching experience, into a highly accessible and cogent textbook. The book contains excellent discussions and expositions of just about all the technical concepts one would ever need in industrial practice. The example problems are juicy, to say the least, and complement the text very nicely. Those who know how to use Matlab or Mathematica will benefit hugely from solving the computer problems. In my opinion, this book should be a required text for all undergraduate chemical engineering programs, along with the book by Prof. Harmon Ray and B. Ogunnaike (Oxford).

Good explanations, but frequent typos.

Overall, this book helped me make sense of a fairly difficult course. Unfortunately, I would often find myself spinning my wheels trying to solve example problems and derive equations that were full of typos. I know all textbooks have errors, but this one seemed worse than most. I would highly recommend downloading the errata list before reading anything. The book provided pretty clear explanations of most topics, but some things were out of order and seemed a little confusing. Rudimentary topics that had been used throughout the entire text and were necessary to understand parts of many chapters were explained late in the book and were often difficult to find. Many of the example problems also did not show solutions in enough depth.

I Love The Pointless Book!

I LOVE it! It's fun go through and me and my little brother had fun answering the questions and doing the challenges in the book. It's even more fun if you get the app for this book! I love that futuristic feel it has when you hold your phone over a page in the book that is made for the app and a video will start to play! Very clever and so cool! Great Job Alfie!

About the Author
The owner and creator of Middle School Novel Units is a middle school language arts teacher who was born to teach! My love of learning and my dream to teach began in 1971 on my first day of kindergarten. I grew up “playing school” every weekend in my grandma’s basement. My desire to teach never wavered through the years and finally became a reality with encouragement of my husband to attend college during the years that I stayed at home raising our 4 children. I graduated from the University of South Florida in 2005 and have been happily teaching ever since. Through teaching, I discovered a love of writing curriculum. I wrote my first complete novel unit in 2008. Middle School Novel Units Inc. has been in business since June of 2011.
