Great challenging practice tests
By E. Han
Great challenging practice tests!

My only gripe is that the vocabulary on these four tests are unnecessarily difficult for lower level. The actual test had easier words. Wished students had more exposure to words that will appear on the test- 4-5th grade vocab. Good books typically have words and problems that look similar to the actual test. Unless I am done using all the lower level practice books, I don't think I'll use this book for lower level prep. Even without knowing a lot of vocab on this book (used wordlywise level 4-6), received a perfect score on verbal section of the test.

Critical reading section has a similar problem. Passages are not similar in level of difficulty. Plus the passages weren't very stimulating.

Must buy for elementary school SSAT test takers!
By Happy_in Hawaii
The tests were at about the same level that you could expect on the actually SSAT. The explanations to the answers in the back of the book were easy enough for my 8yr old 3rd grader to understand. I bought just about every SSAT book on Amazon and this was in my top three of usefulness!!

Good practice tests but no way to calculate the scaled score
By beaky's mom
The test questions and explanations are of good quality, but there is no table for converting raw scores to scaled scores. Without that information, you really can't tell how well you've done or if you're prepared for the real thing.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. F&SF editor Van Gelder has assessed, culled and organized the magazine's best stories to produce this definitive volume of work from speculative fiction's top authors, from Alfred Bester's Of Time and Third Avenue (1951) to Ted Chiang's The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate (2007). Hauntingly sad tales are laid alongside hopeful tales of the far future and heroic tales of honor and duty, but all have an intensity of emotion and draw the reader in with vibrant characters, fully realized settings and ingenious writing. Van Gelder's introductory disclaimer that this contains two dozen of our best stories rather than the best two dozen stories may explain the lack of inclusions from the 1980s. For sheer reading pleasure, this anthology is unparalleled. (Oct.)

From Booklist
The long-lived magazine Fantasy & Science Fiction has issued many retrospective anthologies but none more vaunting than this one marking its sixtieth anniversary. As editor Van Gelder admits in the introduction, promising the very best is perhaps overreaching somewhat, given the hundreds of outstanding choices F&SF’s archives afford. Yet the results here are more than just satisfying, and the lineup of contributors amounts to a who’s who of speculative-fiction masters: sf geniuses such as Alfred Bester, Theodore Sturgeon, and Harlan Ellison and fantasy legends like Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and Peter S. Beagle. A few particulars: William Tenn’s Eastward Ho! wryly depicts a future in which Native American warriors finally take their lands back from the white man. Daniel Keyes’ heartbreaking Flowers for Algernon watches as a mentally handicapped janitor is granted superintelligence during a scientific experiment, only to find it slipping away when the experiment fails. Every story is a priceless gem showcasing its author’s superlative craftsmanship and ability to engage the emotions while captivating the imagination. --Carl Hays

Review
“Still the gold standard for short fiction in America.”
—Stephen King

“Fantasy & Science Fiction editor Van Gelder has assessed, culled, and organized the magazine’s best stories to produce this definitive volume of work from speculative fiction’s top authors, from Alfred Bester’s ‘Of Time and Third Avenue’ (1951) to Ted Chiang’s ‘The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate’ (2007). Hauntingly sad tales are laid alongside hopeful tales of the far future and heroic tales of honor and duty, but all have an intensity of emotion and draw the reader in with vibrant characters, fully realized settings, and ingenious writing. Van Gelder’s introductory disclaimer that this contains ‘two dozen of our best stories’ rather than the best two dozen stories may explain the lack of inclusions from the 1980s. For sheer reading pleasure, this anthology is unparalleled.”
—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“This collection marks the 60th anniversary of one of science fiction and fantasy’s leading publications, gathering together 23 of the magazine’s best stories—though editor Gordon Van Gelder writes that he feels as if he has taken a few chunks off the top of an iceberg and claimed to have represented its entire mass. Contributors include the familiar—Ray Bradbury, Shirley Jackson, Stephen King—alongside authors better known to genre aficionados, such as James Tiptree, Jr., Michael Swanwick, and Terry Bisson. Among the highlights are Daniel Keyes’s ‘Flowers for Algernon,’ in which Charlie Gordon has his intelligence artificially increased, and Ted Chiang’s ‘The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate,’ which marries time travel with Arabian Nights–style fable. The word ‘classic’ could justifiably be applied to many stories in this volume, which, as a tribute to the magazine and an introduction to some of the finest authors of fantasy, SF, and horror, is a landmark anthology.”
—The Guardian

“For a long time, F&SF (as the magazine is known in the trade) has been a leader in expanding the terrain of speculative fiction. Judging from this volume, it intends to continue in this role.”
—Roland Green, Booklist

“It’s obvious why Fantasy & Science Fiction has thrived while competitors have vanished. Eloquent, scintillating, often sublime.”
—Kirkus

“I’m so envious of those of you who might be reading some of these for the first time. I was repeatedly blown away by the impact such short pieces...still had on me. Half an hour’s reading, and I spent the next day or so catching myself staring off into space muttering, ‘Oh wow.’”
—io9.com

“...this is a rare treasure that compiles some of the best genre stories over the past six decades, and through it, we witness the field’s history and growth.”
—Bibliophile Stalker

“...I dropped everything to read it.”
—Black Gate

“I cannot picture any fan of either fantasy or science fiction not liking this book. Perhaps the only reason to stay away is if you have all the stories in it already. But if, like me, several of them are missing from your collection, what are you waiting for? Buy it.”
—Visions of Paradise

“...the contents are sheer pleasure, full of classics that feel as comfortable as an old sweater.”
—Bookgasm

“...this is a high-quality anthology showcasing the diversity of Fantasy & Science Fiction's stories over the past six decades. It shows that short genre fiction has always had the power to surprise and excite, and it proves that this remains just as true today as it has ever been.”
—SF Crowsnest

“Every story is a priceless gem showcasing its author’s superlative craftsmanship and ability to engage the emotions while captivating the imagination.”
—Booklist

“There’s something for everyone in this amazing anthology, and it will certainly provide hours of entertainment for anyone who reads it.”
—San Francisco Book Review

“Spanning six decades (1951-2007), The Very Best of Fantasy & Science Fiction: 60th Anniversary Anthology is an all-star cast of short stories the genre can be proud of.”

Solid collection of stories over the lifetime of F&SF Magainze
By Jvstin
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book through the kind offices of the Publicist of the publisher, Tachyon Publications.

The Very Best of Fantasy & Science Fiction, edited by Gordon Van Gelder, is an anthology of stories across the eponymous magazine's 60 year history.

Although I am not a heavy reader of SF magazines (when I read SF stories, its usually in anthologies or collections), it is clear to me, immediately, that F&SF has had a wonderful history of publishing some of the best stories in SF history.

And a swath of those stories are ably collected by Mr. Van Gelder in this collection. The stories range in publication date from 1951 (Alfred Bester's Time and Third Avenue) to 2007 (Ted Chiang's story The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate).

Arranged in chronological order, the stories show the changes and evolution of the SF story with a high quality of selected stories throughout. Its not just a "most famous" story group either. While there are genre-famous stories like Flowers for Algernon, the Deathbird, and Harrison Bergeron, there are stories that are in that class, but much well less known. (Zelazny's This Moment of the Storm, for instance, or Peter Beagle's story sequel to the Last Unicorn, Two Hearts come to mind)

With that in mind, I devoured this book quickly and gleefully. I enjoyed the touchstones to the classics and old favorites, and discovering new (to me) stories as well. Gelder has done an top notch job.

Genres that forget their history are condemned to fail by that forgetting. Collections like this help the genre of SF keep in mind its roots and history. Any serious fan of science fiction would do well to dip their oars into this volume.

The lineup:

Of Time and Third Avenue, Alfred Bester
All Summer in a Day, Ray Bradbury
One Ordinary Day with Peanuts, Shirley Jackson
A touch of Strange, Theodore Sturgeon
Eastward, Ho!, William Tenn
Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes
Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut
This Moment of the Storm, Roger Zelazny
The Electric Ant, Philip K Dick
The Deathbird, Harlan Ellison
The Women Men Don't See, James Tiptree Jr (Alice Sheldon)
I see You, Damon Knight
The Gunslinger, Stephen King
The Dark, Karen Joy Fowler
Buffalo, John Kessel
Solitude, Ursula K Le Guin
Mother Grasshopper, Michael Swanwick
macs, Terry Bisson
Creation, Jeffrey Ford
Other People, Neil Gaiman
Two Hearts, Peter S Beagle
Journey into the Kingdom, M Rickert
The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate, Ted Chiang

Many must-read stories in this collection
By Stefan
The Very Best of Fantasy & Science Fiction: Sixtieth Anniversary Anthology is an excellent collection of 23 stories picked from the treasure trove of short fiction that's been published in the eponymous magazine over the past 60 years. Editor Gordon Van Gelder -- also the editor of the magazine since 1997 -- has done an admirable job, picking stories that illustrate the diversity of both the genre and the magazine. As such, this is a great anthology for SF&F fans as well as newcomers looking for a taste.

The line-up of authors in this collection looks like a veritable Who's Who of speculative fiction: Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Stephen King, Roger Zelazny, Ursula K. Le Guin, Neil Gaiman -- just to name a few of the most famous ones. What's even more impressive is the fact that all the stories collected here saw their first publication in the magazine. It really gave me pause when I realized that a towering classic such as "Flowers From Algernon" by Daniel Keyes first appeared in this digest-sized magazine (and if you haven't read that story yet, you have at least one perfect reason to get this anthology right now!). Every story is preceded by a brief and thoughtful editorial note, often highlighting its author's involvement with the magazine.

The quality of these stories is, as could be expected, almost uniformly excellent. Stand-outs for me were: the previously mentioned "Flowers For Algernon" which is about a mentally retarded man who gains a brief period of brilliance via a scientific experiment; "Solitude" by Ursula K. Le Guin, an exquisite and touching story set in her Hainish Cycle; "Creation" by Jeffrey Ford, about a young boy's attempt to create life; and "Mother Grasshopper" by Michael Swanwick, about how a far-future civilization becomes reintroduced to death. If I could give these stories individual ratings, they'd all have five stars by their names, with the majority of the others getting a solid four stars. The only disappointment for me was "Buffalo" by John Kessel, a reverie about a fictional meeting between the author's father and H.G. Wells.

By the numbers: out of the 23 stories collected here, I'd call 12 solidly science fiction, 6 definitely fantasy, 1 horror, and the rest hard to place but trending towards the fantastical. Included in that last category is Harlan Ellison's "The Deathbird", which is more or less a genre of its own and one of the oddest things I've read in years. The stories are spread out across the six decades of the magazine's existence, although strangely enough not a single story from the eighties was included. The earlier part of the anthology is predominantly science fiction, and as fantasy became more popular over the years, more stories of that genre appear towards the end of the collection. The only real "high fantasy" story included here is Peter S. Beagle's "Two Hearts," in which the author revisits his classic The Last Unicorn. In terms of length, the stories vary from barely 3 pages (Neil Gaiman's "The Others," a terrifying vision of hell) to Stephen King's 44 page story "The Gunslinger," one of the 5 stories that make up the novel of the same name, originally serialized in the magazine.

Another number, and one that might raise an eyebrow, is 5: the number of female authors represented here, compared to 18 male authors. Also, some readers may look for one or more legendary stories from the magazine that unfortunately aren't represented here. My personal pick would be to add Fritz Leiber's "Ill Met in Lankhmar" novella, originally published in F&SF Magazine and certainly one of its classic -- and now sadly underappreciated -- stories.

Still, it's easy to second-guess almost any anthology, let alone one that attempts to span the life of one of the most revered magazines in speculative fiction. When all's said and done, this is undeniably an excellent collection of stories -- one that will give readers a great look at the history of F&SF Magazine and, in doing so, the history of the entire genre. It's possible that some reader will already be familiar with many of these stories, but if you aren't, The Very Best of Fantasy & Science Fiction: Sixtieth Anniversary Anthology is practically a must-read. Highly recommended.

Well-balanced
By bluemoose
Making a sci-fi and fantasy anthology is no easy task, but the editors have done a good job of finding stories across the whole spectrum, from shoot-em-ups to intellectual sci-fi, psychological/inner world fantasy and medieval sword and sceptre. There are many lesser-known stories from more popular writers that are still great reads. This is a great book for sci-fi fans who are looking for other works by their favourite authors, and for people looking for new authors to discover.

Show Me the Money: Covered Calls & Naked Puts for a Monthly Cash Income, by Ronald Groenke

Are you leaving Cash on the table?

As an investor you have stocks in your portfolio. Those stocks, individually, will go up, down or remain about the same. Nothing really you can do about that. Market forces and corporate actions beyond your control will cause fluctuations in the value of your holdings.

But......

There is one important action you can take that will put cash in your brokerage account, today and month after month as time rolls by.

Selling Covered Calls and Naked Puts is a stock market strategy favored by many savvy investors. Here s how it works. Take one of your stocks, Stock ABC, which has a market price of $29. If you will agree to sell that stock (a Call option) for $30 on the third Friday of next month the market will pay you X amount of dollars today (the option premium). That s the money that you are currently leaving on the table. The premium X varies by stock and typically is two to three percent of the stock price.

Think about what can happen when you sell the option. Only one of two things will happen. If the stock price of ABC is above $30 on the third Friday you sell it for $30. That will happen about 30% of the time. The other possibility is that ABC is selling for $30 or less on the third Friday. In that case the option expires and you can sell another Call.

Either way the option premium Real Cash Money is in your brokerage account ready to be spent or reinvested.

Continue the process month after month for a constant cash income from your portfolio.

The Naked Put strategy also gives you immediate cash. Using the same example with Stock ABC, which is in your portfolio and has a market price of $29, if you agree to buy additional shares at a discounted price of $27.50 on the third Friday of next month (a Put option) the market will pay you Y amount of dollars today (the option premium). If the stock price is above $27.50 on the third Friday the option expires and you can sell another Put, generating more cash income. If the price does dip below $27.50 then you buy the additional shares and can now sell more Covered Calls. The put premium Y varies by stock and typically is one to three percent of the stock price.

This book will give you the basic skills to master the art of selling Covered Calls and Naked Puts.

Fifteen years ago a friend and I tried the options market and failed miserably. A year ago I read Ron's book and two comments hit me like a bolt of lightning:

1) You make money by selling, not buying; and,

2) With options, the goal is monthly cash flow, not long term increase in assets.

What simple concepts. I'm 72 and don t have time for the long-term. I use Ron's ideas and his VISIONS software and have steadily increased my monthly cash flow.

My experience with Ron Groenke has been very positive:

I picked up Ron's book at Barnes & Noble a few months ago. It was well written and easy to read. Even though I consider myself an experienced investor as I was in the financial planning business for over 10 years, this was the first time I had heard of Ron's concept of using covered calls and naked puts. The concept immediately made sense to me and I have implemented it with a good deal of success. His Visions software - RonGroenke.com - is a great compliment to the strategy. Not only has Ron come up with a great investment strategy, he is a very nice, honest man who is obviously passionate about his system.

An interesting method but it understates the risks involved
By Individual Investor
Ronald Groenke rightfully stresses the importance of cash flow but he understates the risks involved. This is a book written for option beginners and, as such, a little more emphasis on the risk involved would be appropriate. The book is mostly about covered calls and while there is not much additional risk in selling covered calls there is an important trade-off that should be considered. When you sell covered calls you give up the possibility of a Peter Lynch style multi-bagger replacing it with an income stream.

There is not much discussion about selling naked puts but if they are suggested it should be made clear that they are a lot more risky than covered calls. The first caveat is that unless you are called Warren Buffett you have secure the puts. The puts are "naked" in that they are not covered by stock short sales but they are secured with cash or margin. On page 54 Groenke says: "And you get paid up front when you sell a Call or a Put. That money is yours no matter what." This not true for puts, the premium you get plus another amount is retained by the broker as a guarantee against being assigned. If assigned, that money goes to pay the shares you are buying.

Groenke also overstates the income you get from the puts. In effect he ignores the amount of money you put at risk when selling the naked put which is the strike price less the premium you receive. From page 43: Jake asks "With Career Education you sold numerous Puts and they expired. How would you computer your return on that?" to which Graham replies: "Perhaps with the potential investment of an assigned put." That is the correct answer but that is not how he computes the rates of return on the puts. On page 45 there is the case for Plexus which shows a gain of 9.96% based on $17.604.50 invested in 800 shares at $22.00. But the total amount of money put at risk is $17.604.50 for the shares and $19,462.02 for the puts, $20,000 strike less $537.98 premium received. Using $37,066.52 as your base, the return is only 4.84%. My calculation assumes that the stock goes to zero and while that is not likely, had you invested in Lehman Bros. or Enron, well...

I bought the book because I too like selling covered calls and cash (margin) secured naked puts. Frankly the story of Jake and his professor is a bit corny but don't let that put you off, it helps pace the real stuff. One reviewer complained that the book is really an infomercial, which it is. One of the big difficulties in investing is finding stocks to invest in, one should have an inventory of potential candidates. If the software Groenke has for sale, which I have not tested, lives up to what he claims for it, then it makes a lot of sense for him to offer that software and explain what it does. A lot of books are long on theory and short on practice. Show Me the Money is short on theory but, with the help of the software, long on practicality.

As a closing comment, if you are going to sell naked puts, make sure not to overextend your margin, the money you got for the puts has not been earned until either the puts are bought back or they expire worthless.

A Written Infomercial
By T. John
The first few pages are an advertisement for his website/software and I knew right away it was going to be "another one of those books." I love reading stock books though, so I chose not to judge a book by its cover or by the first few pages. It didn't get better... It was basically an infomercial, literally; it even had fake characters telling their story. The story is about a couple and their rich friends and in the beginning of the book the character even thinks to himself, "Hmm... I wonder which one of my rich friends that new bentley belongs too" (not literally word-for-word but that is the basic idea. From the title "Show Me the Money" I was expecting an advertisement, but like I said, I dont judge books by their cover. I feel like my intelligence has been insulted. Let me get one thing clear: selling monthly options IS a good strategy and that is why I bought this book - I wanted to learn more about the strategy, but this book quickly ended up in my garbage can. If you want to learn about selling options then I encourage you to keep researching, however, save yourself the time and try other books first.

A 200 page advertisement
By B Priz
If you're already familiar with covered calls, this book is elementary. It really could have been condensed into about 25 pages, just including the stock search criteria and the explanation of the key indicators. I tried out the trial of the free software also. It was all right, but nothing your brokerage couldn't give you. I paper traded a couple of the recommendations and they did all right, but the problem was the option premiums on the selected stocks were too low to make any money.

Amp geeks rejoice
By Super Mato
Just in time for Christmas! If you like to know more about the amazing Marshall amplification business, here it is. A triumphant success story of a man who had a tough start to life, listened to what his customers wanted, then gave it to them.
As stated in the title, THIS IS A HISTORY BOOK. For a lightweight coffee table picture book or a guide to servicing and schematics, look elsewhere. If it seems like your thing, put on your waders and jump in, you won't be disappointed.
Step by step, year by year and model by model it goes from the origin of the company through to Marshalls 50th anniversary and sadly, Jims passing. There are enough juicy tidbits about who said this and who did that for it to read like a page turning fictional novel.
Three years ago, I would never have been interested in photos of aluminium chassis, turret boards, capacitors and resistors, but now it is exactly what I want to read.
Oh, and guitar players (which is probably why you're reading this) have a huge input as well. Clapton, Townsend, Hendrix, Page - this list of Rock Royalty and their involvement is a continuous thread throughout the book.
Michael Doyle and Nick Bowcott have done an incredible job of putting a definitive history in this informative and unique book.
Congratulations guys, a job very well done!

Must-have for the Marshall lover
By Markm
Michael Doyle and Nick Bowcott have done a wonderful job of updating Doyle's 1993 version. It is missing the technical reference material and schematics of the previous edition (I suggest getting both) but it an excellent read. I wish the authors could have gone in to greater depth with 1970's JMP era's 1959, 1987 and Master Volume models especially considering how many classic Rock songs were recorded with them. I still love the book and give it high marks.

Bought this book as a Christmas gift for my father-in-law ...
By Hugo Dahl
Bought this book as a Christmas gift for my father-in-law, who is a through and through Marshall lover and user for his musical and band needs. It goes without saying, he is THRILLED with this book, and couldn't stop thumbing through it the entire evening it was given to him. His comment was that this book is much more thorough and in depth than any information that could be found online from disparate sources.

This was definitely an absolute "win", and would be for any fan of Marshall, be it you or someone in your life!
