Rocket or Jamaican?

I was, as usual, looing for an edge to improve my sprinting technique
and my coaching skills.

There are a lot of options for the sprint start, and many experts, so to have
a comparison of two different styles in one book (at a reasonable price)was too good to resist.

There is a bit about different body types and strenght so you have to use your own experiences as to what
applies to whom. The final analysis is not totally clear but an experienced coach or
competitor will work it out.

In reality it is hard to make a change but there are a number of differences that can be applied
to improve on your current style. I particularly made use of the acceleration pickup at 20m which earned me
a silver in a recent World Titles competition (giving away 8yrs and one metre to the winner).

So, use it, or at least try it. Nothing to lose.

The Letters of LTG Kuribayashi

LTG Tadamichi Kuribayashi, an officer of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, was one of those rare individuals who seem born to become soldiers. Displaying a strong will and unorthodox tactics during the struggle for Iwo Jima in early 1945, he nevertheless was possessed of a rare humility and ingrained honor that made him a highly-respected leader to both his subordinates and enemies.

"Picture Letters from the Commander in Chief" is a very short read. It is simply a collection of LTG Tadamichi Kuribayashi's letters to his family during his time abroad as a young military man and his letters from Iwo Jima island. Reading the actual letters portrayed so movingly in "Letters From Iwo Jima" serves to round out one's understanding of who Kuribayashi was as a man.

There are no insights to his tactics for the Iwo Jima battle and only a small window is opened into his personal views on the Pacific War in one of his last letters from the forsaken island. The rest of them were written and sketched by him for benefit of his wife and children. As his son Taro and later, his infant daughter Takako, were very young when the letters were written oftentimes the subjects were light and focused on Kuribayashi's observations of his time in the United States or anything light-hearted he could report from the dismal island of sulfur that is Iwo Jima.

The letters reveal above all a loving and doting father, who despite enormous distances from his children still cautioned them on discipline. Preparing for the Battle of Iwo Jima, which would cost him his life, he still found time to correct his Tako-chan's grammatical errors in her letters to him and apologized to his wife for not fixing the draft in their kitchen during his last leave. His occasional snipes at his wife for not writing him or for the paucity of packaged herring roe sent to him during his stay in America will elicit a smile from any married man. His love for his wife and children permeate the letters, particularly in his first letter from Iwo Jima, when he instructs his children to grow fast and take care of their mother after his death.

"Picture Letters from the Commander in Chief," if read as an appendix to Kumiko Kakehashi's powerful portrayal of Iwo Jima in "So Sad to Fall in Battle," serves to further deepen an understanding of who Tadamich Kuribayashi was as a man.

This is a very simple book. As noted, it is a collection of letters sent to a commander's wife,son and daughter with illustrations that he drew by hand while he was visiting America in the late 20's. It reads very quickly since it is virtually a picture book. It is very moving to read the thoughts of a military commander who knew he wasn't going to return home and how he expresses his love for his children. I've read it once and went through it again. If you enjoyed seeing the movie Letters From Iwo Jima then you will really enjoy this book.

Glimpse into the Private Life of an Enemy Commander.

The book is a compilation of Kuribayashi's letters home to his children during his military career. It's a very touching glimpse into the heart of a father from another culture who is separated from his children and is trying to have some kind of communication with them. Each letter is illustrated with Kuribayashi's own hand and each provides for the children an illustration of their father's everyday life in a foreign land, taking a stroll, riding in a car, even taking a bath.

Kuribayashi encourages his children to do well and to be good to each other and to listen to their mother. His last letter from Iwo Jima is especially sad as you can tell he expects never to see his family again.

Outstanding overview of language in gaming

Page for page, this is one of the most academically rigorous and informative books in game studies. I have a fairly shallow background in linguistics, and this book was tremendously helpful in applying linguistic techniques to my own analysis. Each chapter concludes with a short case study demonstrating the usefulness of the techniques or properties of gaming language explained; the excerpts, while brief, are lucid and quickly demonstrate what linguistic analysis has to offer the study of games. I suspect that undergraduates could use this slim book to conduct interesting research in a field that familiar to them and easy to access. While the tone of this book is quite academic, the chapters are of a very manageable length and waste little time: the references and connections to broader semiotic theory and linguistics are there for scholars, and the meat of the content is accessible enough for any student.

My only complaint is that the corpus of linguistic analysis Ensslin refers to throughout the book is not yet available; I'm sure it will be a tremendous asset to games researchers when it's finished.

I think this book will be useful to any qualitative researcher studying games and highly recommend it.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University. Hibbeler's professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, Sargent and Lundy, Tucson. He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana. He has taught at the University of Illinois-Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College. Hibbeler currently teaches at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Yes, please!

I LOVE Hibbeler's Statics. I do not like his other books.

Statics is one of those that typically comes straight after one has taken a basic linear algebra course, and said student is probably in the midst of either an electromagnetics physics course (good for learning about those vector properties!) or a physics course focusing on optics/waves (great for getting more practice with trigonometry!). There's probably a bit of overlap, and the fundamental idea of Statics (namely that the sum of forces go to zero since nothing is moving and everything balances itself out) is such a simple one that as the book progresses one feels more confident in one's ability to do the problems.

Indeed, because make no mistake. This is first and foremost a hardcover workbook--legends say there are more problems in a Hibbeler textbook than there are atoms in the universe! And that's just in the first chapter!

And Hibbeler excels in giving you problems, too. You're not regurgitating the same problem with an extra load bearer or with a roller instead of a rocker for support. No, you are given I'm pretty sure every possible problem you could ever expect to need to thoroughly examine any structure you want. And his examples, oh, wow, he couldn't be more descriptive if he tried, and he's very clear on emphasizing the section's learning objectives in each so you actually can tackle all those varying problems of his. Typically, a student goes "I can do this type of problem, but show me this other type and I just can't." That doesn't feel an issue here, and problems flow nicely from simple to hair-pulling difficult.

And because the underlying nature of Statics isn't a difficult one, not only is this perfect for self-study, but it's also perfect for getting in shape for an FE exam.

Not a very good textbook in my opinion. Hibbeler solves problems in the most difficult way possible when my professor makes them so much easier. Doesn't do a great job at explaining example problems either.

Paracelsus

While the forgottenbooks.org print left much to be desired, Hartmann's composition on Paracelsus gave maybe the best telling of his life and work available. The book is mostly quotes from PC's work interspersed with Hartmann's modest commentaries. Paracelsus was a man far ahead of his time. As was Hartmann. Worth reading for anyone on the Path.
