Cartographia: Mapping Civilizations, by Vincent Virga, Library of Congress

CARTOGRAPHIA offers a stunning array of 200 of the most beautiful, important, and fascinating maps in existence, from the world's largest cartographic collection, at the Library of Congress. These maps show how our idea of the world has shifted and grown over time, and each map tells its own unique story about nations, politics, and ambitions. The chosen images, with their accompanying stories, introduce the reader to an exciting new way of "reading" maps as travelogues---living history from the earliest of man's imaginings about planet earth to our current attempts at charting cyberspace.

Among the rare gems included in the book are the Waldseemuller Map of the World from 1507, the first to include the designation "America"; pages from the Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570, considered the first modern atlas; rare maps from Africa, Asia, and Oceania that challenge traditional Western perspectives; William Faulkner's hand-drawn 1936 map of the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi; and even a map of the Human Genome. In an oversized format, with gorgeous four-color reproductions throughout, Catrographia will appeal to collectors, historians, and anyone looking for a perfect gift.

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on the Library of Congress's 4.8 million maps and 60,000 atlases, this is an overview of cartography in different times and cultures. Veteran picture editor Virga upends our notion of maps as two-dimensional representations of physical spaces by presenting depictions of imaginative or spiritual territory: a 17th-century map of the soul has five entry points, each corresponding to one of the five senses. And while we're accustomed to maps being oriented north, Islamic and some other cartographers oriented their maps south, as in an eye-opening 1996 Upside Down World Map made in Australia that shows the down under continent approximately where we usually see Greenland. Virga provides historical, sociological and anthropological background to each map. Captions for the plates are so small as to be almost unreadable, making it difficult to follow Virga's interpretations of the maps. Still, this is one of those rare coffee-table books that deserves to be read, that repeatedly delights the eye while informing the mind about the rich variety of humans' attempts to orient themselves in the world. 201 color illus. Score one for people who love maps!
By Armchair Interviews

"X" marks the spot. Do you remember that? You knew you'd found treasure--or at the very least, an amazing secret waiting to be unearthed.

Cartographia is a treasure that is waiting for map and history lovers of all generations to discover. This beautiful work of art will hold your attention for hours as you look at maps drawn on paper, on wood, on stone, on figurines, and in tapestries. World maps, metaphorical maps, a map depicting a square earth and round heaven, maps on warfare, and the Oregon Trail. From ancient maps to one of the human genome, they're all contained within the pages of this book.

The text brings history alive and helps to develop an understanding of the psychology and culture behind the creation of these charted representations.

Vincent Virga, "America's foremost picture editor," is well known in history circles. Collaborating with The Library of Congress (where more than five million maps reside), he has put together an awesome book illuminating the diversity of people who populate our planet. Not only their different geographic landscapes, but also their cultural and social visions of the world and how those ideas have changed over time are represented. From Africa to the Netherlands, China to Ireland, Christianity, Judaism, Islam...you will receive a sense of human attitudes and ideas thoughtfully portrayed in the permanent form of maps.

If you ever get a thrill finding your destination, reading the map key to open the mysteries before you, or locating your house on Google Earth, Cartographia will captivate you.

If you know someone these emotions apply to, don't let them miss this book.

"X" marks the spot. You can find it in Cartographia.

Beautiful and interesting
By Marie
The most beautiful book on map history that I've seen. The text is learned yet very accessible, and the images well chosen and printed. Virga's attention to the politics of maps repeatedly hits the right note. The production is everything you might expect from the Library of Congress. I own one and have given others as gifts. (Heresy disclosure: I've even cut up a much-worn used copy to make framed maps and handmade stationery.)

Where's the bibliography?
By Nonfiction Author
Although this is an attractive coffee table book, the lack of a bibliography is troubling. Vincent Virga does not cite the scholars whose ideas he disseminates. Virga admits in the acknowledgments that he didn't "get" maps or mapmaking when he started the project. Yet, he takes credit for the ideas, as if by hanging out with scholars and librarians at the Library of Congress, he was able to come up with a "new approach" to cartography and to understand the map history of every corner of the globe. This would take a lifetime of study. One of his main sources is the multi-volume encyclopedic History of Cartography published by University of Chicago Press, which introduces and explains many of the same maps. Yet he never cites this important and original work nor refers his readers to it. In fact, he does not cite a single book or article.

More ethical and scrupulous nonfiction authors who write for a popular audience use endnotes and a bibliography or an annotated bibliography to give credit to the scholars and authors whose work they popularize. Virga's "cartobibliography" shows only where he got permission to reprint the images. Without a real bibliography, most readers will never find the scholarly works where Virga got his ideas. It is troubling that the Library of Congress participated in this project on
those terms.

Kindle edition stinks
By hkleiner
I liked the fact that the kindle edition was so much cheaper than buying the book, but then when I started using it, I realized there are TONS of typos and cut off graphs and charts. Its not unusable, but you would think they actually proofed this stuff.

Just bad
By M
This is a horrendously bad textbook, and I hope that the authors read this. Your "Cornerstones" examples in the chapters do not match the "Cornerstone Exercises" at the end of the chapters. This makes some of the assigned exercises impossible to do. Even my accounting tutor got these wrong. Chapters that are 40 pages of dense text, filled with blathering academic babble instead of clear, concise explanations and diagrams. To paraphrase Mr. T., I pity fool that gets stuck with this textbook!

This is a horrible book for a Cost Accounting course
By Twon
This is a horrible book for a Cost Accounting course. Cost accounting is a good course, but the information in the book wasn't presented well, which made the course uninteresting and made me have less desire for the subject. Cengage Learning is also horrible. When I took cost accounting, I stopped reading this book and referred to an older version of the book, which presented the information well. If you see this book, run.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–This book combines the bold and energetic lines of graffiti art with the bright colors of cel-shaded video games and an obvious Japanese manga influence. Many aspects of it are different from other how-to-draw books. Most don't discuss genre-specific concepts like wild style lettering or hip-hop clothing. The teaching itself is unique and totally accessible: the drawing instructions are narrated by two brothers, with the younger learning techniques from his older sibling in a way that anticipates the relationship between readers and the book's creators. Scattered among basic drawing instructions are such ruminations as hip-hop is a force majeure, a vibrant, moving, breathing energy and If you're drawing hip-hop, it's necessary to get into the places where hip-hop lives, and I don't mean the radio station. Such statements might seem out of place in the context of a cartooning book, but Scott and Ex speak with such respect and passion for hip-hop culture that the occasional asides are welcome. There is no other book of this kind on the market, making it a necessary and relevant purchase.–Steev Baker, Kewaskum Public Library, WI

I got this book for my nephew who's serving time in jail, for defending his self against a well known gang man, who was going to kill him. I hope by in proving his drawing skills it will help him when he's release from prison. This will keep him busy.

Recognizes that caffeine is a weak drug
By A Customer
This book provides a good look at the well known alerting agent, caffeine, which is a weak drug. There are other books which more closely look at the role of caffeine on paying attention, perhaps the most famous book being How to Cure Hyperactivity (ADHD)(1981) by Dr. Anita Uhl Brothers, M.D., of Berkeley, California and C. Thomas Wild which reports that caffeine compounds can temporarily reduce distractibility and increase attention span for a small subgroup of those with Attention Deficit Disorder, working better and with less side effects than Ritalin.

Why We Fail: Learning from Experience Design Failures, by Victor Lombardi

Just as pilots and doctors improve by studying crash reports and postmortems, experience designers can improve by learning how customer experience failures cause products to fail in the marketplace. Rather than proselytizing a particular approach to design, Why We Fail holistically explores what teams actually built, why the products failed, and how we can learn from the past to avoid failure ourselves.

Review
The stories behind failures make for fascinating reading. But this book offers more. It provides important insights into both what can go right and what can go wrong in a product offering. To make great products, we need to understand what makes some fail and others succeed. To all the aspiring, young entrepreneurs who are reading this: take heed. Embrace failure to learn from failure. Learn from failure to avoid failure. --Don Norman Co-founder, Nielsen Norman Group Author of The Design of Everyday Things (Revised and Expanded)

Success feels great. But beyond the fleeting sensation of good will, what does it tell you? Failure, on the other hand, provides a gold mine of insights that can help you do better in the future if you're willing to do the hard work required to evaluate why things went wrong. Victor's book provides a useful guide, with lots of examples that make it clear that you're not alone in screwing up. --Karen McGrane, author of Content Strategy for Mobile

Success is boring. Failure is much more interesting--and instructive. In this practical and well-researched book, Victor Lombardi presents a series of vignettes about design projects gone wrong. He wisely avoids the temptations of schadenfreude, however, instead transforming these cautionary tales into useful lessons for the modern designer. --Alex Wright, Director of User Experience, The New York Times

About the Author
Victor helps organizations design products and build businesses that offer the best possible consumer experience. He does this by combining his liberal arts education and technology industry work into a perspective that is both practical and human. Victor began his career in IT on the help desk, where he daily witnessed poor design and helped customers overcome it. Progressing to system administrator, he learned how networks, servers, and websites actually work by building them. Transitioning to become an interface designer, he worked for a decade contributing to more than 40 software and Internet products for organizations such as General Electric, Cisco, J.P. Morgan, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. He's coached teams at Reed Elsevier and Rodale through the entire product development process, and helped turn around a failing media business at Fox Mobile Group through the development of a new web platform and mobile apps. He's passionate about learning and sharing what he learns: He earned a master's degree in music technology from New York University and a bachelor's degree in journalism from Rutgers University, co-founded the Information Architecture Institute and the Overlap conference, and taught at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute. He's also written a book, Why We Fail: Real Stories and Practical Lessons from Experience Design Failures. Finally, Victor walks the walk by developing his own product, Nickel, with the goal of making personal financial planning accessible to everyone.

Learning from Others Mistakes is Much Easier.
By Timothy Coats
Great review of the nature of failure and how even great companies and great people have and will continue to fail. One of the more important realization that are discussed is that everything really is about the experience. That is what the customer is looking for.

How to Fail Better
By Michael A Dila
There are way too many platitudes about failure these days. Embracing failure is a pop-y truism, but feels like counter-intuitive nonsense to many. The best voices in that chorus want us to risk bold things and know that though failures await us, that they should not deter us, should not prevent us from being ambitious.

But failure can also be paralyzing and devastating. To paraphrase Frank Herbert: Failure is the mind killer. And for creative people and entrepreneurs, a mind is a terrible thing to see wasted by crushing failure.

So it is a very, very, good thing that Victor Lombardi has written such a smart, generous and accessible book about what we can learn from failure and how.

The humble premise of Lombardi's book is that failure is unavoidable. His hopeful conclusion is that it never needs to be fatal.

A great deal of Victor's book concerns the emergence of practices and methodology that help to include considerations of customer and user experience into the design process rather than in the forensic analysis of product and market failure. All this, and in-depth examples in chapters that take less than 30 minutes to read. There is amazing and deeply empathetic economy at work here.

The work in this fine book belongs to the new literature on improving entrepreneurial outcomes that includes Alex Osterwalder (Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers), Steve Blank (The Startup Owner's Manual: The Step-By-Step Guide for Building a Great Company), Eric Ries (The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses) and the Lean start-up movement. Not that either examples or the lessons are limited to start-up entrepreneurship. To the contrary, there is much for corporate product and service innovators here as well.

If you want a smart, practical and useable guide to the skills at the intersection of design and business and a treasure trove of insight from the most instructive kinds of failure, you must read Why We Fail.
