About the Author
Se�n Corkery is a priest of the Diocese of Cloyne in the Republic of Ireland. Ordained in 2008, he pursued his licentiate and doctoral studies in systematic theology at the Pontifical University, St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Co. Kildare. He works in the Diocese of Cloyne as a Diocesan Advisor on Education and as Director of Adult Faith Formation. He is also a member of the national steering committee for Adult Studies in the Catechism.

About the Author
Rex Warner was a Professor of the University of Connecticut from 1964 until his retirement in He was born in 1905 and went to Wadham College, Oxford, where he gained a ‘first’ in Classical Moderations, and took a degree in English Literature. He taught in Egypt and England, and was Director of the British Institute, Athens, from 1945 to 1947. He has written poems, novels and critical essays, has worked on films and broadcasting, and has translated many works, of which Xenophon’s History of My Time and The Persian Expedition, Thucydides’ The Peloponnesian War, and Plutarch’s Lives (under the title Fall of the Roman Republic) and Moral Essays have been published in Penguin Classics.

Martin Marty, one of today’s most respected theologians, is professor emeritus at the University of Chicago, where the Martin Marty Center has been founded to promote public religion endeavors. His more than fifty books include Modern American Religion. He is a winner of the National Book Award and was the first religion scholar to receive the National Humanities Medal.

Best Translation

I will not review Augustine's Confessions itself, since I am assuming that if you are reading this, you probably already know what a classic of autobiography, theology, and philosophy this text truly is. Instead I want to indicate that Rex Warner's translation is particularly good. In fact, I think Warner's translation is still the best available. There are many options out there, but Warner's rendering, especially for this price, is the best in my estimation.

Great book, but rip out the foreword.

I purchased this book because I was seeking a translation by Rex Warner for my 14-year-old. If I had read the trashy foreword by Elizabeth Block, I would have found another version instead. I am not sure why Ms. Block feels the need to saddle the readers of St. Augustine with a glimpse into her own sex life. How does hearing about what positions she and her husband tried to conceive suitable for public consumption? Hers is not a confession, it is just drivel peddled without decency. I have ripped the foreword out.

Eight pager of Block is way too much Block.

How much did Elizabeth Block pay the publisher to get herself noticed, or is it exhibited, along side St. Augustine? My one star rating is far greater than her personal musings deserve. But with her pages ripped out, as suggested, Rex Warner's translation and Martin Marty's observation in an afterword should get a five star rating with standing applause.

About the Author
Runoko Rashidi (born 1954) is a historian, essayist, author and public lecturer based in Los Angeles, California and Paris, France. He is the author of Introduction to the Study of African Classical Civilizations (1993) and the editor of Unchained African Voices, a collection of poetry and prose by Death Row inmates at California's San Quentin maximum-scurity prison. He is a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Pan African Studies (www.jpanafrican.com), and he holds an honorary doctorate of divinity from Amen-Ra Theological Seminary (Los Angeles, California).

I was fortunate to get an early copy of this very important compendium by Rashidi. Rashidi is a very competent researcher, and I have personally corresponded with him on a project with Tony Brown's Journal, that was a success for him, and provided very impirtant information on Africans in Asia, to the African diaspora community.

I had participated with a group that brought Van Sertima to SIU during Black history month in the early eighties, and discussed many issues with him on the African presence in early America. He would definitely be proud of not only the superb photos, but the rudite manner in which Rashidi is known for putting together articles, documentts, pamphlets, and of course, anthologies, and books. The anthology was very well put together, and captures many very prominent African, African Diasporan, scholars, that cover all discipline areas in field research concerning "that other Afrcan".

Good work Rashidi, and many thanks to Emmanuel and my brothers at Books Of Africa, LTD. I wouldn't have gotten the early copy without your efforts.

About the Author
Dr. Clifford J. Drew is a professor in Special Education and Educational Psychology at the University of Utah. He spent ten years in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and has been with the University of Utah since 1971. He has over 110 scholarly contributions, including books, chapters, and articles as well as national and international presentations; and more than $11 million in federal, state, and private sector grants to his credit. His articles have appeared in Exceptional Children, American Journal of Mental Deficiency, Psychology Reports, Psychonomic Science, Science, Mental Retardation, Journal of the School of Psychology, School of Psychology Review, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Journal of Learning Disabilities, and American Journal of Family Therapy, among others. His academic interests include research methods, human development and disabilities, applications of information technology, and outreach in higher education.

Dr. Michael L. Hardman's distinguished career includes positions at the University of Utah as Interim Senior Vice President (Provost) for Academic Affairs, Dean and Professor in the College of Education, University Coordinator for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Center for Community of Caring, associate dean for research, and chair of the Department of Special Education and the Department of Teaching and Learning. Other accomplishments include being appointed Governor's Representative to the California Advisory Commission on Special Education and serving as Senior Education Advisor to the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Foundation in Washington, D.C. for 20 years, as past president of the Higher Education Consortium for Special Education, and on the International Board of Directors for the Council for Exceptional Children. He has directed or consulted on numerous international projects on school improvement for U.S. AID, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and UNICEF. He has numerous publications in national journals and has authored several successful college textbooks. As a researcher, he has directed international and national demonstration projects in the areas of educational policy and reform, developmental disabilities, professional development, inclusive education, transition from school to adult life, and preparing tomorrow's leaders in special education.

I know, a list of three things looks better and the alliteration is irresistible. And anyway, you do get 300 very good ideas, some of which you'll know, many of which may be new. This is one of those portmanteau books that throws a lot of stuff into an overnight bag and heads for a thoroughly good weekend away. It packs for all weathers and occasions and is as happy tramping the hills in a rainstorm as it is rocking it up in a ballgown at a five star hotel in the evening. It might even shove in a little je ne sais quoi in case it gets lucky. Some of the ideas are simple: Make a mahl-stick; some more adventurous: Using tone in context - for instance (I've given up on the travel metaphor now, let's not milk it). It's one of those books to have on the shelf and pull down when you just want something not too demanding to browse. Maybe you don't want to make a mahl-stick, maybe you've got glazing off to a T, but there's loads to ingest and enjoy, nothing's too long (some tips come four to a page) and there are bags of illustrations. You might find something new, you might get some ideas or you might simply find your creative juices refreshed. ACRYLIC PAINTING TECHNIQUES

This is a very good book on acrylic painting techniques with lots of instruction, tips and trade secrets about using acrylic paints.

Starting with the basics, the book explains how to begin setting up and the good reasons for using acrylic paints. He discusses color, brushes, brush techniques, painting knives, sponges and shapers. He shows how to stretch and mount a canvas and how to set up a studio.

In chapter two, the author shows how to design a painting; how to create a good composition, pick good subjects and he explains color theory.

In chapter three, the author, explores techniques. He discusses acrylics, water colors, action painting, gouache, classic and modern oils, monoprinting and more. All of the illustrations are in full color. The paper is heavy stock glossy.

There are many examples of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and animal studies. Each painting is shown in several stages of completion with tips on how to get it right. This is an exceptional book aimed at the beginner or slightly advanced artist that will make you a better painter in the acrylic medium.

A go-to acrylic technique book worth keeping open when painting.

While browsing online through some art collections and current exhibits in London museums and public galleries, I clicked on "Store" in each site just to see what was available - I was mostly interested in books on collections and exhibits that included discussions of the artists' techniques and materials. For one of the large public galleries, this was the only acrylic techniques book listed for that store. So, I dropped in here to Amazon and read all the reviews. Then, I went elsewhere on the www and read more reviews. Then, I came back to Amazon and bought it. Over the last few months, I have consulted it as often, if not more often, than the other handful (i.e., less than six) technique books I keep handy while painting.

If you are like me and don't want to take the time to experiment to achieve a particular effect when painting (or also like me don't have a long attention span so don't always remember what I'm doing), this book should be added to your reference library.

A unique & welcome perspective

As the author of "Defending A King ~ His Life & Legacy" about the incomparable Michael Jackson, I have a special and perhaps relentless interest in MJ that has led me to read most of the books about him. "Will You Be My Friend" is unique in its depiction of MJ, already the mega-famous entertainer, in relationship with the author when he was just a boy who was privileged to get to know the human side of Michael Jackson across years of travel, adventure, and fun.
It is refreshing and uplifting to read about the greatest entertainer of our times as he befriends, mentors, and enjoys simple pleasures with his young friend Michael [the author] in various settings along his concert tour route. The innocent, childlike MJ emerges from the pages as a caring, fun-loving, humble, and down-to-earth man who loved life, loved children, and interacted with kids at their level -- a kid himself at heart. Thank you to Michael Jacobshagen for writing this book and for the right reasons -- to provide MJ fans and the general public with his special, firsthand perspectives on the consummately famous man who shared everyday experiences with him and truly became his friend.

Yes but you Michel Jacobshagen so disrespected Michael Jackson by posting pictures on social media of his sacred and final resting place. Which BTW looks like you photo bombed his crypt. Wow!! And to film with a tabloid? Then one thing MJ hated. Being a "friend" you should know this. No I would never give you a penny!! Sad you sold out your precious friendship for that almighty $$$.

Boring and strange

This book is very strange and boring. No new information about Michael Jackson.

Mr. Jacobshagen wrote in his book, that he has met Michael Jackson for the first time at Disneyland Paris in 1995 and he published photos of a boy with "Bayern Munich" Cappy on his website. Unfortunately, the face of Mr. Jacobshagen is not clearly visible on these photos. On Youtube exists a French News-Video, that shows the face of the boy with the cappy clearly. This boy looks not like Mr. Jacobshagen!

It is also strange, that Mr. Jacobshagen has published in his book only photos with him and Michael Jackson from 1998 (Hotel Bayrischer Hof/ Cirus Krone).
He wrote in his book, that he accompanied Michael Jackson during the History Tour. Where are the photos from Disneyland-Paris or from his time with Michael Jackson on Tour, why only Munich?

Also interesting is the interview of Mr.Jacobshagen and his mother - in 1998 was his name Michael Mondtkowski - with RTL Televison from 1998 (Video also available on Youtube only in german language). According to the interview Mr. Jacobshagen has met Michael Jackson for the first time in Munich in 1998. Im irritated, that Mr. Jacobshagen or his mother nothing said about his longtime friendship with Michael Jackson since 1995 or that he accompanied Michael Jackson during the History-Tour. Nothing!!!

my favorite from Hesse

When I read about this book, way back when I read a lot of classics, the essay I read said this was Herman Hesse's least important book and the characters weren't"real". Curious, I read it in one sitting and loved it. Typical!
I saw this available on Kindle and thought I'd read it again and see if, like many books I read in my twenties, this one no longer pleased me. Surprise! Still like it a lot. Are the characters real? They are in the sense that people are still like this: they still do stupid things, feel sorry for themselves, fall in love with their best friend's girl, create music, don't understand their parents and commit suicide sometimes. And those real actions make them real enough for me.
If you don't mind a book without car chases, serial killers or sex give this a try.

Hesse is my favorite author. Each of his works has touched me in some way. My only regret is that I didn't start reading his books earlier in life. However, maybe I would not have appreciated them as much without a boat load of life experiences.

I have 25 Ludlum books in my Kindle. This is my second favorite. The first time I read this book I did it without stopping. It is very thrilling and I just kept turning the pages to see what happened.
