Marcia calls herself an "unlikely caregiver" who, like most caregivers, was suddenly thrust into caregiving without any prior training. She writes from the perspective of a person who shares what she has learned on-the-job and from her personal research. Over the years she has cared for several adults in her home including a blind diabetic aunt, a mildly-retarded young man, her father-in-law, and her mother. She has cared for her mother-in-law, an Alzheimer's patient, since 2012.

From the Author
The concept for Home-Based Eldercare: Stories and Strategies began when I was invited to speak at the Christian Family Eldercare Conference held in Denver, Colorado in 2015. Included on the speaker roster were many experts in the field of healthcare. My role was to address eldercare from the perspective of one "in the trenches," however, offering practical and encouraging insights for others who were considering whether to care for their loved ones at home.

As I prepared my presentation, I realized that I had too much important material to cover in a one-hour workshop--there would be many unanswered questions. So I compiled the additional material into an ebook for those who wanted more in-depth information.

Home-Based Eldercare was well-received at the conference and Generations with Vision contacted me about publishing a print edition. It has been a pleasure to work with them to bring this timely information to a broader audience.

Marcia Washburn writes with transparency about the joys and challenges of caring for adult relatives in her home over the years. Her experiences have led to a rich understanding of how God's grace sustains both the caregiver and the care-receiver.

The author of over a dozen books, Marcia's articles have appeared in many nationally-recognized magazines, as well. She is known for her practical, down-to-earth writing and live presentations, offering strategies, support, and encouragement on family-related topics such as parenting, homeschooling, music, and home caregiving.

Marcia holds a Master's degree in music education. She was awarded the 2009 Dr. Ruth Beechick Award for Outstanding Contribution to Home Education in the State of Colorado for her many years of service with Christian Home Educators of Colorado.

The mother of five adult sons, Marcia enjoys living with her husband in Northeastern Colorado where they have cared for his mother, an Alzheimer's patient, since 2012.

Excellent resource for those caring for the aging at home!

Marcia Washburn has been known in homeschooling circles for a long time as she has authored a number of very insightful and practical books to encourage homeschooling parents to provide their children with a top-notch education. Now with her children grown, she has turned her focus to helping others do has she has successfully done during the past decade - care for aging parents in a home situation. Marcia has provided care for both her mother, who died after a long illness, and now cares for her mother-in-law who suffers from dementia. Marcia's loving kindness is matched with her excellent organization and communication skills, making this book very helpful and practical for the younger generation to care for the older generation following Biblical principles. She shares her life transparently and with humor, but also gets to the nitty-gritty of caring daily for bodies that are failing, and minds that aren't what they once were. This is a very good book for adult siblings to read and determine together what will be the best way to care for their beloved parents, while keeping them at home, instead of moving them to an institution permanently. Home-based elder has been happening for thousands of years, but for some reason 'enlightened' Americans have moved away from it. Be inspired that you and your family can do this, and do this well, and more importantly enjoy this special season in a multi-generational household.

Real-life, practical tips and encouragement

I wish I would have had access to "Home-based Eldercare" when I began my journey caring for my parents fifteen years ago! The book is chock-full of real-life, practical tips to help the reader cope with the ever-changing landscape of eldercare – especially when dementia or Alzheimer’s is involved. Marcia writes from the trenches in a compassionate, faith-inspired voice to provide encouragement and tools for caregivers in various stages of eldercare. The author does appear to gear her writing toward readers who are female, married, and have raised children (there are frequent comparisons between eldercare and parenting young children). However, this does not diminish the overall value to anyone who is currently a caregiver or who will partake in the sacred responsibility of honoring their parents during their golden years.

Powerfully packed full of helpful insight.

As a caregiver for my husband, who is in late stage Alzheimer's, I was thrilled to get this book as I have always valued Marcia's insight, humor and practical approach whever I have seen her face challenges. I found the book to be extremely helpful and know our 10 children would truly be encouraged by the tips and anecdotes and poems and remarkable information gathered across a wide spectrum of sources to help those of us who have chosen to make this long, long goodbye with our loved ones. A must read. One point she made that particularly resonated with me was a short comment in chapter 7 where she observes that nothing stays the same, just when you think you have a plan...Thanks, Marcia for writing out of your busy life experience to reach and help so many others.

The Indian navy’s silent but deadly sub surface fighting arm has undergone tremendous changes since the first Foxtrot submarine was inducted into the service on 8th December 1967. The submarines have been a complex mix of diesel-electric - nuclear propulsion; Soviet - Western - Indian design; and imported - licence - indigenous build. Be it a two man swimmer delivery vehicle or deep water Kilo’s and HDW’s or blue water Charlie I and Akula II class SSGN’s or strategic Arihant class SSBN’s, the navy has operated the entire spectrum of submarine types. The grit and determination of the submariners is not just limited to fighting but also to build their own machines and fight. The submarine arm is also a bit of mystery and usually finds mentions in few pages in naval books or makes headlines during accidents. The book traces the origin and growth of the submarine arm of the Indian navy.

The book has been written in consultation with Cmde Arun Kumar, AVSM, NM (Retd.) who has served 28 years in the submarine arm and has headed critical submarine upgrade and procurement plans. In his twenty eight years of submarine career, he held various staff and command appointments. He was Commodore Commanding Submarines (East) & Commanded INS Virbahu, the submarine base in the East which is still regarded as the 'Alma Mater' by the submariners of the Indian Navy; commanded the guided missile destroyer Rajput; and the Submarine Training school Satavahana. His last appointment in service was Principal Director of Submarine Acquisitions at NHQ.

VAdm K.N Sushil, PVSM, AVSM, NM, ADC, Former Chief Southern Naval Command (Redt.) has written the preface. Cmde Ranjit B. Rai (Retd.) has contributed 3 chapters to the book.

There have been quite a few books about the Indian Navy. However this book is perhaps the first of its kind as it talks exclusively about the submarines in Indian Navy. The book covers the details of IN’s submarine forces in past (‘Foxtrot’) present (‘Kilo’ and ‘Type 1500’) and future Scorpene, Arihant and her sisters. Very informative.... This books gives a good account of our submarines in 1971 war. As they were not in the limelight a lot of people (including yours truly) had always wondered what IN submarines actually did in the 1971 war. In fact the book gives a good account of IN’s submarine forces from 1970s till date .... If you are a man suffering from this condition and want to learn how to cure it, not worth the read

After my latest relationship went sour with a gorgeous woman after catching feelings - compounded with a decade of similar behavior patterns, I recently realized I had this condition. There 's already significant amount of information throughout the internet on what madonna/whore is, but very little practical information on how to treat it

I purchased this book after seeing "Can Madonna / Whore be cured? " as a chapter of the table of contents only to find the chapter mostly making anecdotal references to her husband's madonna/whore complex and how she ultimately left him. The only other tidbit is that curing it will take "hard work" and that the the author "doesn't have all of the answers". Thanks. Real Helpful. No real advice on how to deal with this at all if you have it.

This book provides a good and simple explanation about the Madonna/Whore Complex. The author describes her own struggles for being married to a man who suffered from this Complex. It was easy for me to relate and emphasize with the author's emotional challenges described in this book as I was also married for 12 years with a man who suffered from the same problem. The author provided good real life examples and supporting references about this dysfunctional behavior.

Boy could I have used this before getting married!

This would have been great for me and my wife before marriage. It is packed with all sorts of great questions you need to answer before marrying someone. So many divorces could be easily prevented when making sure that you and your future partner know what to expect.

Don't believe every review you read, even this one.

I usually don't leave reviews but I felt I needed to on this one. I almost didn't try this book because of the negative reviewers proclaiming the book was porn. I wouldn't even classify it as erotica. Just my opinion, but it seems pretty standard urban fantasy romance, and honestly much tamer than a lot of other paranormal romance books I've read.

However, once I did get started, I almost didn't continue reading because the first two chapters were a lot of "thinking in exposition". For example, why is the point of view character thinking about the color of his own hair or why is the point of view character explaining something to himself (in an internal thought) things I would assume he would know. I wouldn't think to myself I'm a human, and then define it in detail, to myself. It's distracting, but after the initial exposition, the story picks up, and you don't notice it as much as it goes along.

I didn't connect with the characters as much as I have with other books, but I wasn't cheering for the antagonist to kill them, as I sometimes do if the characters annoy me. :)

The plot is typical paranormal romance - in summary - twenty something woman is demon hunter (mother killed by demon, surprise), she has sex with/ends up falling for demon (surprise), has a lot of angst about this, demons are evil, and oh hey, she's part demon(really? I'm shocked!), she's hot for the hero, but he's evil, blah, blah, eventually realizes not all demons are evil, more conflict, but eventually admits her love for him, he for her, and they get their happily ever after. If you like that, you will love this book. Not a whole lot of worry or tension, (I felt I could put it down at anytime, and not need to rush back to it) but a quick, light read on a cold afternoon. Didn't hate it, didn't love it, but I was willing to give the next one in the series a try.

Happily, I enjoyed the books more as they went along, and recommend you give the series a try.

Love this series...

I absolutely love Larissa Ione and all of her work. This story is the first in the Demonica series. I was never much a fan of demons and angels until I started reading this series. Tayla and Eidolon pulled me in from the start. The entire Underworld General Hospital and the world that Ms. Ione has created keeps me captivated. I recommend her to all of my friends, and I wholeheartedly recommend this book as a start to her work. If you are anything like me, you will buy everything she has written and devour it in a matter of weeks.

I'm not even a huge paranormal reader, but the romance between Tayla and Eidolon hit all the right notes for me. What an amazing book! I've never read anything so delicious in my life. The writing ... lovely, powerful, evocative and edgy. The characters? Strong, compelling and memorable. The plot? Tight as a drum, break-neck pace.

It's also chock full of interesting secondary characters, who don't seem like sequel bait so much as an important part of the protagonists' lives. Ms. Ione also manages something very difficult; she does a compelling job with the world-building, giving us just enough to let us understand what's going on, but there's never an info dump. I'd say this is one of the most original paranormal romances I've read all year. If you're not familiar with the concept, it's about the demonic underworld, centered around a hospital that takes care of otherworldly injuries. Genius! Her execution of this creative premise is nothing short of genius.

I picked this book up after I finished my draft of Doubleblind and I devoured it in one sitting. The passion between to the two leads is explosive, and the sex is set-fire-to-the-pages hot. Ms. Ione has also set up some of the best tension I've ever seen between two leads. You know how sometimes in romances, the reason the hero and heroine don't get together seems a bit manufactured, full of dime-store angst? In this book, there's a serious Romeo and Juliet vibe. If I'd emailed her a list of my criteria before she wrote this book (and I didn't), telling her what I want in a paranormal romance, she couldn't have written a novel more perfectly suited to my tastes.

For me, this book was an A+. If you like dark, gritty, edgy, intensely emotional and erotic romances with a rocket ship full of genuine conflict and angst, you don't want to miss this book. I'm now a total fangirl (and that doesn't happen too often). I can't wait for the next installment

About the Author

Dahlia K. Remler is Professor at the School of Public Affairs, Baruch College, and the Department of Economics, Graduate Center, both of the City University of New York. She is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Dahlia has been in an unusual mix of disciplinary and interdisciplinary settings. She received a BS in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, a DPhil in physical chemistry from Oxford University―while a Marshall Scholar―and a PhD in economics from Harvard University. During the Clinton administration’s health care reform efforts, Dahlia held a fellowship at the Brookings Institution to finish her dissertation on health care cost containment. She then held a postdoctoral research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, followed by assistant professorships at Tulane’s and Columbia’s Schools of Public Health, prior to joining the faculty at Baruch. She enjoys comparing and contrasting how different disciplines see the same issues.

Dahlia has published widely in a variety of areas in health care policy, including health care cost containment, information technology in health care, cigarette tax regressivity, simulation methods for health insurance take-up, and health insurance and health care markets. She has also recently started working on higher education and media issues. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Health Affairs, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Journal of Public Health, Medical Care Research and Review, and many other journals. She blogs on health care policy, higher education and other topics at DahliaRemler.com.

Dahlia lives with her husband, Howard, in New York City, where they enjoy the city’s theaters, restaurants, and parks―and Dahlia enjoys being a complete amateur dancer in some of the city’s superb dance studios.

Gregg G. Van Ryzin is Professor at the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers University―Newark. He received his BA in geography from Columbia University and his PhD in psychology from the City University of New York. During his doctoral training, he worked as a planner for a nonprofit housing and community development organization in New York City, and he completed his dissertation on low income housing for the elderly in Detroit. He next worked in Washington, D.C., for ICF Inc. and later Westat, Inc. on surveys and program evaluations for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and other federal agencies. In 1995, he joined the faculty of the School of Public Affairs, Baruch College, where he directed their Survey Research Unit for 8 years. In that role, he helped develop and direct the New York City Community Health Survey, a large-scale behavioral health survey for the city’s health department, and also played a key role in shaping and conducting the city’s survey of satisfaction with government services. He has spent time in Madrid, collaborating with researchers there on the analysis of surveys about public attitudes toward Spanish government policy.

Gregg has published many scholarly articles on housing and welfare programs, survey and evaluation methods, and public opinion about government services and institutions. His work has appeared in the International Review of Administrative Sciences, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, the Journal of Urban Affairs, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, Public Performance and Management Review, Urban Affairs Review, and other journals.

Gregg lives in New York City with his wife, Ada (a history professor at NYU), and their daughters Alina and Lucia. They enjoy life in their Greenwich Village neighborhood, escaping on occasion to Spain, Miami, Maine, Cuba, and other interesting places in the world.

An accessible book for research methods

This is a great book, especially for readers who are trying to get a clear, accessible overview of research methods. I used this text in a graduate-level intermediate research and analysis course, and wish I had it for my first research and analysis course as well!

The chapters provide real world applications of theory, and progress naturally - but can also be read isolated. The chapter summaries are strong and contain a decent amount of questions that reference the chapter's material very well. If you go over the questions, the chapters will stick with you, and the material will come naturally.

The statistics overview is very strong, I suggest going over these chapters before exploring any of the technical material.

A great reference book as well, I've used it when I needed to cover topics ranging from multiple regression to difference in differences studies.

Buy it!

This manga trilogy was a hoot to read. I enjoyed it more with each subsequent reading and it really cries out for a fourth book. (On the other hand maybe it's better left to the imagination). A teenage boy and girl get sucked into Alice's Wonderland and somehow they swap bodies with Mokoto the boy in Alice's body and vice versa. They meet friends and foes in the effort to get back home. There are a few sinister moments but over all it's a fun lighthearted series. I also had a blast using gimp and paint to color in 20 or so of the BW photos while watching 3 football games one Sunday.

The Moravian monk and naturalist Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) labored quietly over the years in his abbey's garden, becoming known locally as a reliable meteorologist with an unusually green thumb. He was much more than that, of course, but his transforming experiments in what a later acolyte would call "genetics" were less well known. When he published the results of his many attempts to discover the mechanisms by which traits are passed from one generation to the next--in Mendel's case, in sweet peas--it was in the proceedings of a local scientific study group, and it would take nearly two decades before researchers in more august institutions would in turn discover Mendel's work and apply it to their own revolutionizing biology in the process.

Mendel's life was full of disappointments: he failed his qualifying examinations to teach high school several times, and he had trouble getting the scientific establishment of his day to take him seriously. In her lucid, often moving life of the great (and to all purposes self-taught) scientist, Robin Marantz Henig gives readers a view of the deeply religious man himself and of his work not only in the context of his time but also in light of recent developments in the constantly changing field of genetics. Taking issue with historians of science who have sought to discount Mendel's contributions to the field, she makes a well-defended claim that the monk in his small garden should be honored as a genius: "a man with a vision and the dedication to carry it to its brilliant, radical conclusion." The author of numerous books (e.g., A Dancing Matrix: How Science Confronts Emerging Viruses) and articles on popular science and medicine, Henig here recounts the life of Gregor Mendel, the 19th-century monk who laid the groundwork for modern genetics through his pea-breeding experiments. Instead of using the standard biographical form, the author, who describes her writing as "educated deduction," employs a more descriptive, narrative style a few steps removed from the currently popular fictional biography. Very little information exists about Mendel, many of whose papers were burned after his death, and Henig fills in the blanks with probable scenarios. She paints an exceptionally human portrait of the monk that falls between the inflated hero and the beneficiary of lucky accidents. Henig's Mendel is a realistic compromise, a man who experienced failures and successes through intuition, luck (good and bad), and hard work. General readers will find the story very engaging, and the introduction to genetic theories is clearly outlined. This work will not be as appealing to scientists, who may take issue with "filling in the blanks" and the simplified discussion of genetics. A clear and engaging account of the life and times of the Moravian monk whose passion for numbers and painstaking work with pea plants laid the foundation for the modern science of genetics.Science writer Henig (A Dancing Matrix, 1993, etc.) acknowledges at the start that conjecture and educated deduction were needed in telling Mendel’s story, for very little of his writing (three papers, seven letters, and a brief autobiography written when he was only 28) survives. However, Henig is not telling Mendel’s story in a vacuum. She depicts the intellectual milieu of 19th-century Europe, the beliefs and arguments about creation, spontaneous generation, and inheritance, and the storm of controversy that followed publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species. Mendel’s immediate world, an Augustinian monastery where teaching and research were emphasized, gave him the freedom to pursue scientific study in the fields that fascinated him: mathematics, botany, physics, and meteorology. Lacking records telling exactly how, when, in what order his botanical experiments were done, Henig pictures Mendel in his monastery garden, “tweezers in one pudgy hand and a camel’s hair paintbrush in the other,” moving slowly along his rows of pea plants, collecting pollen. While his cross-breeding experiments were meticulous, his 1865 report of his findings on heredity went largely unnoticed. Darwin never read the copy of Mendel’s paper he received, and the only scientist who did acknowledge it (Nageli, a German botanist) misinterpreted it—possibly intentionally and perhaps through jealousy. A widely read horticultural textbook published in 1881 did cite Mendel’s work, but it was not until 1900 (16 years after his death) that Mendel’s paper was noticed by three scientists working in three different countries. Henig deftly explores the circumstances surrounding the rediscovery of Mendel’s work and his subsequent enshrinement as an unappreciated genius and father of a new science. Henig not only achieves her goal of making Mendel come alive as a “flawed but brilliant human being,” but provides a fascinating picture as well of a scientific age when luck and personalities—and not just brains—determined success. -- Copyright � 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. Informative and engaging

I thought I had read enough nonfiction history books to know what to expect -- edifying, but not entertaining. This book blew those expectations out of the water. Chock-full of information, yes, but also liberally sprinkled with anecdotes and slices of life from the times surrounding Mendel and his rediscoverers. It's downright funny at times. I came away with an understanding of the birth of genetics that I'd even never known I was missing, not to mention a renewed interest in the field, without ever really realizing that I was reading a work of historical scholarship -- those are dry. This was fun.

A fascinating account of a life and an idea

This book is a vivid picture of a not-so-vivid genius. Henig's ability to make her subject come alive is impressive. In a graceful and entertaining style, she shows his diligent, painstaking work and his very human qualities; there's nothing dry about this book. I particularly enjoyed the byways Henig took me down. She provides fascinating details about not only Mendel but also other scientists and scientific controversies, both during Mendel's life and afterwards. She sets the stage brilliantly, I think, and shows the repercussions of Mendel's work with lively portraits of men like Bateson and Weldon. I would recommend this book heartily, both to people in the field (such as my son, who is a geneticist) and to people who like a good read about a major figure and an important era in scientific history.

A wonderful story of how science is done

As a gardener, I love the story of a monk who loves gardening founding the science of genetics -- and it's a good story. As a mother and sometimes teacher, I love the fact that Mendel was a lousy test-taker and didn't do well in school as a result -- and still became the founder of genetics.(He became a monk to get an education, as I recall--or was it to do his plant breeding work? I don't remember that detail.) At a time when overachievement is a sickness, this tale of a man who loves his numbers becoming obsessed about patterns in pea reproduction stumbling on the secret to a whole modern industry is tonic. And the whole second half of the book, which is the story about how his discoveries were lost and found and became the center of a story of science politics, are simply fascinating. I am a little puzzled at the reader who complained there was no original research. You don't even have to read the book to know the author went to Brno. On C-Span Books the author explained about how when she was at the monastery in Brno she learned about the "secret" door in the monastery's formal library and went through to the room in back where the monks actually studied and did their work -- and how it was from that window that they probably shouted out to Mendel in his garden, thereby explaining one piece of the puzzle about why people thought he fudged his numbers and why he probably didn't. Far more interesting to me, in some ways, was realizing that this was a time when religion supported science and science was something the average gardener could get involved in and would then talk about in a local talk -- in the days before people were glued to their tv sets -- when science and religion weren't seen as adversaries, as they appear to be in Kansas. A good read.
