About the Author
Milorad Cvijetic is a professor in the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. For more than thirty years, he has been directly involved in state-of-the-art R&D in several of world s leading telecommunication laboratories. Dr. Cvijetic has published numerous technical papers, authored three books, and has been the author/coauthor of twelve US patents, all related to optical communications and networking.

Ivan B. Djordjevic is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona, with a joint appointment in the College of Optical Sciences. In his professional career, covering both industry and academia, Dr. Djordjevic has published over 300 journal and conference papers, authored three books and thirteen US patents on advanced optical transmission schemes.

Excellent in breadth and quite up to date

I've had this book for about 2 weeks now, and I am very happy to add it to my library of references on optical fiber communications. The number of topics addressed in this volume is impressive - more so because it is quite current with the latest developments in the industry and the standards bodies. New standards such as flexible DWDM grids are explained along with the technologies they support, such as superchannels, OFDM and all-optical OFDM, Nyquist WDM, and systems designed to operate at beyond 100 Gbps. The book also addresses such fundamental areas as dielectric waveguide theory, fiber characteristics (loss and dispersion, etc.), and laser diode physics. Of course, the downside to such breadth is that many areas are treated briefly - with an introduction to the problem and a review of results. For example, if one really wants the details on fiber waveguide analysis, there are other texts that address the details more completely - my favorite in that area is Buck's 'Fundamentals of Optical Fibers' or for laser diode analysis, Coldren's 'Diode Lasers and Photonic Integrated Circuits' is hard to beat. This isn't a knock against this particular book, as I think it does a really good job of introducing those topics (and going into enough depth for most people), and it does this for a comprehensive set of technical areas. Cvijetic also manages to cover networking topics such as MPLS, OTN and the like in a useful and creditable way. In summary, if you are really into optical networks, this is not the only book you'll want to buy... but if you were only allowed one book - this would be a very good choice.

Great textbook

I am a student at the University of Arizona and I have taken a class in this subject with one of the authors, Dr Cvijetic. What can I say, he is one of the pioneers in fiber optic communications. The textbook is very thorough, it goes from basic fiber communications into graduate student analysis, its a two semester senior-graduate level course here. The book is well written and I plan to keep it as a reference. The author's thorough treatment of the subject will have you able to design and analyze optical communication systems with an understanding of the important principals involved.

HIGHLY ACCESSIBLE OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS RESOURCE!!

Are you an electrical optical engineer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Milorad Cvijetic and Ivan B. Djordjevic, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that aims to introduce and treat a series of advanced and emerging topics in the field of optical communications and networking.

Authors Cvijetic and Djordjevic, begin with an outline of the role of optical networking in the information society, and explain the Ethernet technology as a foundation of packet-based networking. Next, the authors describe the characteristics of the optical components that are commonly deployed along a lightpath, thus having an impact on light propagation, optical networking, or advanced signal processing. In addition, they describe in detail the propagation properties of different types of optical fibers. The authors also present an assessment of the optical channel impairments and their impact to the signal transmission along the lightpath. Then, they continue with a description of advanced formats, including the following: multilevel modulations and multidimensional constellations. The authors then address advanced detection concepts that include; coherent detection, coherent-optical OFDM, channel equalization, MIMO detection, and compensation if various impairments. Next, they present an overview of advanced FEC techniques for optical communication. The authors also will describe different network topologies and characteristics of lightpath routing with respect to initial routing and signaling constraints. In addition, they describe in detail the modeling and simulation of optical-communication systems and evaluation of optical channel capacity. Finally, the authors provide an explanation and fundamental description with respect to the physics of semiconductors and signal information theory.

This most excellent book is self-contained and structured to provide straightforward guidance to readers looking to capture fundamentals and gain both theoretical and practical knowledge that can be readily applied in research and practical applications. In addition, this great book is also structured in such a way that the reader can easily understand the general topic without looking to outside literature.
