Her early life was bleak and unpromising. After years of sadistic abuse from the twisted man she knew as "Daddy," she seemed to be headed along a bumpy path. Despite setbacks, Gal managed to complete high school. After further difficulties with drugs, alcohol, and men, she was finally able to turn her life around through the love and support of her second husband and his extended family. Ruthie Bolton, known as "Gal" to her family, was born in the Hungry Neck section of Charleston in 1961. Her mother was 13 at the time, her father unknown. Tired of the frequent beatings she got at home, her mother soon left, leaving Ruthie to be raised by her grandparents. Dominating the household was Ruthie's brutal grandfather, who kept his family in want despite a job that paid well, who beat his wife and children and had numerous girlfriends. When Ruthie was still small her grandmother was beaten to death, and the years that followed were marked by violence, also. Hardened by the abuse, Ruthie developed a stutter, took drugs, got married too young, and lost her child to her husband's family. Eventually she met Ray Bolton, and the love and acceptance she found in his large family were her redemption. Ruthie's own, authentic voice--aided by that of writer Josephine Humphreys, who transcribed Ruthie's story from tapes--helps make this story of pain, courage, and salvation completely convincing. Although this book is more than 20 years old, its story of a woman's redemption by familial love is timeless. In times of financial and political turmoil, it is good to remember that the part of life we do have some control over, our family relationships, can be crucially important.

Unforgettable

It felt as if I was right in the room listening to Ruthie tell her story. Heartbreaking, horrid, painful memories... my deepest reflection being Ruthie's aversion to watching Roots as Gal, itself, took me back to the Color Purple... and I mean right back to the Color Purple!
Reading Gal might make some turn pages so hard that pages rip from the book. The first few sections and I wasn't sure I could finish, but then midway through Gal shifted... or maybe I picked up on a deeper pull I was getting from the book. Sure enough, nearing the end of Clovis's life the feeling was confirmed. Ruthie needed to tell this story. She had a tremendous amount of pain to release, in which she couldn't have selected a better medium. The reconciliation here being me seeing Ruthie's family's pain through the same eyes Mama Bolton was able to see hers. Key point *PAINfully* easy to recycle if not picked up on.
There truthfully is so much in here... incredibly organized, tastefully detailed, and not all pain and tears either. I'm still too tickled about Luther... especially by the way Ruthie (mere) mentions him near the end. And the conversations between her and Mrs. Millican, and the connection made between she and Mary... whoa! What a powerfully inspiring note to end on.
Ruthie's voice really carries, taking this piece to the top... making for an unforgettable memoir I couldn't put down.

Carefully Crafted To Preserve a Dialect in an Astonishingly True Story.

This is my third time around in reading this book.
It's captivating, even heartbreaking at times and in spite of that, a real joy to read.
The author, Josephine Humphries, takes a gentle approach to the storytelling, making it hard to put it down. I particularly loved that she so carefully preserved Ruthie Bolton's dialect in the writing.
I'm so glad to have repurchased this book!
