About the Author
Hasan Ali Toptas, one of Turkey's foremost writers, has won numerous prizes, including his country's most prestigious, the Orhan Kemal Novel Prize. His work has been translated into German, French, and Flemish. His early masterpiece Shadowless (1995) will be published by Bloomsbury in 2016.
Translator Maureen Freely, a novelist herself, is also the English translator of Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk. Her co-translator, John Angliss, won the British Council Young Translators' Prize in 2012.

Complex Novel about the Power of the Past

Superficially Reckless might be seen as a buddy novel with themes familiar to anyone acquainted with Turkish popular cultures. Ziya returns to his village in the east of the country, to be greeted by his close friend Ziya, an old pal from the army. Yet Ziya’s vision of an idyllic future is not realized; he feels ostracized by the families who once welcomed him. There is also another factual fly in the ointment: why does Kenan feel such a great debt of gratitude to Ziya, despite Ziya’s protestations.
The only way Ziya can solve his difficulties is to project himself into the past, a world haunted by the needless killing of a bird when he was a child. Author Hasan Ali Toptaş is keen to stress how much impact that deed had on Ziya’s future existence, however much he tried to forget it. Past actions, it seems, always have an impact on present and future. Ziya spends much of his time in a netherworld in which dreams and reality are perpetually confused, thereby emphasizing the power of the imagination to prevent as well promote intellectual and personal growth.
Much of the novel is devoted to Ziya and Kenan’s experience of compulsory military service on the Syrian border. They have to put up with appalling cruelties from the NCOs and commanders, who demand total respect and rigid discipline. Anyone challenging the status quo is dismissed as an animal and subject to further indignities. While Toptaş has criticisms to make, he is more concerned with the ways in which the apparently endless commitment to drilling, sentry duty and completing menial tasks prompts Ziya to retreat into another dream-world dominated by past reflections on the present, as well as his future, if he should be lucky enough to complete his military service. This world has been further complicated by experiences of dealing with Syrian prisoners.
He manages to escape this world; and the novel returns to the present with a dramatic climax in which the true connection between Ziya and Kenan is revealed. But our interest focuses more on Ziya’s relationship to nature – despite his having witnessed such violence while on military service. He firmly believes that the innate connection between humanity and the trees can never be severed – even after death. We were both in nature and will return to it. By comparison, worldly affairs such as friendship, conflict and reconciliation seem unimportant. God’s presence looms over the novel, both controlling yet benevolent. To pray in the mosque or to reflect on his deeds brings people closer to him.
Toptaş writes in an allusive style, with sentences building up one on another to create an impression rather than a realistic representation of his characters’ emotions. He makes us believe that while the corporeal world has its superficial attractions, it seems insignificant compared to the universe where past, present and future are inextricable. Hence the importance of reflection on dreams as well as on the nuances of human behavior. Readers expecting to devour the text, as they would do with a thriller or a plot-driven novel, will be disappointed. Reckless yields its charms, even if we have to concentrate quite hard on the structure, which oscillates between past and present with dizzying regularity.

A little slow for the first 100 pages

This is the story of Ziya, an ex-army man who decides to leave the city for a quiet village life. That it does not answer is not really a surprise. Ziya lost his wife and their unborn child and was badly scarred in an explosion sixteen years ago and is consequently a troubled man. Kenan was his friend in the army, almost 30 years ago. His stories of his beautiful village were what made Ziya choose it as a refuge in a bid to find peace.
The first two chapters were little more than confused blurs to me. In the first chapter, Ziya is returning the key of his apartment to his landlady and she just begins to talk and talk about her life history and that of other people, while pigeons keep crashing into the windows and smoke seems to gather before his very eyes. The second chapter was little better. Here Ziya is a little boy, who along with his friends goes out to hunt birds with thrie catapults. He manages to kill one and is so traumatized that he keeps seeing the bird everywhere and then attends a marriage next door. Only by page 100 did the author suddenly provide some explanation for what occurred in the previous pages.
Chapter 3 is where the story begins to take a little normal turn towards storytelling, although the author seems unable to let go of his propensity of adding metaphors in every second line. The slow and overly mataphorical first two chapters put paid to my enthusiasm for the story. Even though the story seemed to get interesting after 100 pages, I was unable to truly enjoy it.
If one is forewarned then I suppose it will be possible to like the book. I was simply exhausted by the time the real story beg an and failed to regain anything greater than a passing interest in the work.
Also, this is another translated verse and made me wonder whether the metaphors that the author used constantly would have appeared less floral and more relatable in the original text.
