Damn! Why didn't I write this FIRST?

Many 'how-to-get-published' books are vague in the concept of writing, but strong on the proposal and submittal of manuscripts. Marc McCutcheon makes his book stand out with specifics for getting your writing noticed, published, and sold. His writing style is casual and humorous, yet professional. I found it to be easy to read, inspiring, and factual. He puts in print what I've been thinking for years as I browsed through the latest Thousands-of-Reasons-to-Make-Maccaroni-type titles: I could've written that...I'm not even a PhD and I could've done that, and so-on.
McCutcheon's tips on writing are very concise and motivating, with a fresh delivery of facts, not rehashing. The book also contains a thorough section of resources; from finding an expert on your nonfiction topic of choice, to a glossary of publishing terms for newbies. You'll find examples of query letters McCutcheon used himself to sell his books, as well as sample contracts with translations from legalese into normal language.
He lists several success stories of everyday people who sold blockbusters. Common obstacles are addressed such as not having a degree (he is a high-school dropout himself), whether your idea is promotable, contract negotiation, and how to research. You are shown that with the right tools and hard work, anyone can do it.
Once believing I might be able to write a non-fiction book and get it published, I now KNOW it. This is a must-read.

Great information, complete direction

The common conception about writing as a career is that it is difficult to get into and produces many "starving" artists. While this may be true in many situations, Marc McCutcheon argues convincingly that it is not necessarily the case when it comes to nonfiction writing. According to the author over 50,000 new books are published each year, but only about 3,500 of them are fiction. As a result, most of the competition is in the fiction area. The nonfiction area is by far the easiest one in which to become published.
The author relates how even a beginning writer can learn to write nonfiction and start making a living as a writer much faster than commonly believed. The book is filled with the necessary details of not only writing a great nonfiction work but also how to handle contract negotiations, why you need (or don't need) an agent, writing proposals, marketing and just about any other subject that the writer may need to know.
Throughout the book, McCutcheon encourages the new writer and points out that many top selling titles were written by ordinary people without any special writing skills or training. A book that should be on the bookshelf of all writers, I can't recommend it highly enough.

If you are serious about non-fiction- BUY THIS BOOK!

I had an idea buzzing around for a non-fiction book, I wound up buying "Damn! Why Didn't I Write That?" as the title grabbed my interest and I needed more information on writing proposals.

I stayed up all night reading this engaging book. The next day I began hashing my proposal out, following the wisdom and guidance found in the book. Six months later and I've just been offered a contract from McGraw Hill! I think that speaks volumes!

This book will inspire you! Marc McCutcheon offers all the tools, motivation, and information needed to get started. It's no mystery that you have to add the "ideas",the writing talent, and the perserverance, but the rest of what you need, will be found in the pages of "Damn! Why Didn't I Write That?"

About the Author
Ivan Png is Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Professor and Professor of Business Policy and Economics at the National University of Singapore. Previously, he was a faculty member at the John E. Anderson School, UCLA (1985–96) and the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (1993–6). He served as a nominated MP (10th Parliament of Singapore, 2nd session, 2005-06). His research has been published in the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Management Science, and elsewhere.

Dale Lehman is an Associate Professor of Economics and Director of the MBA in Information and Communication Technology at Alaska Pacific University. He is the author, with Dennis Weisman, of The Telecommunications Act of 1996: The “Costs" of Managed Competition (2000).

Let's say that you are not an economist, you are just a business man as I am, when you are ask about microecomics maybe you can still recall something from the university days... but what if you are ask about a soundly pricing policy? usage of elasticities? cost curves? marginal cost/revenues? Do you still feel comfortable with what you recall from university? Maybe not, like me. If you are wondering about having a single book of microeconomics, this book is the one you are looking for (it is also great for MBAs).

Using this text in an undergraduate course.

I have used this book on several times, teaching an undergraduate managerial econ. course with 25-35 students. The overall reaction was good, most students understood the contents and felt that the text concentrated on usable tools, not just abstract economic models. The book may need supplementation for some types of students, something that allows them to do their own empirical or quasi empirical applicatons of some of the tools (e.g., a demand study using Excel).

Supreme Understanding has brought forth a brilliant work in this 2nd volume, Rap, Race and Revolution, a book that I m sure will have the same phenomenal success as his initial work in this series, How to Hustle and Win.
The relevance of this kind of work should not be understated. Supreme s point of view represents a true bridge of understanding because of the way he condenses volumes of information using satire, humor, pimpology, revolutionary theory, metaphysical/ mathematical analysis all into an easy to follow, hip hop-toned conversation aimed at inspiring and empowering the masses to discover their own knowledge of self and the world around us...And then challenging us all to ACTUALIZE this information to empower our people.

Supreme Understanding should feel accomplished since dropping his second installment, Rap, Race And Revolution. This is part two to his very real, very informative How to Hustle and Win. Understanding remains true to his target audience by presenting another rugged guide packed with tips for successful living as well as stories that back up his hypotheses, statistics, and resources to obtain more information. There are so many gems in this guide, it is hard to pinpoint what stands out more. But I will start with a few entries that made me pause and think. In the small entry titled `If Einstein was Black,' he proposed that if Einstein lived in the hood with his disabilities, he would have been a drug addict or dead beat dad. Einstein's environment would not have been conducive to the way he learned and he would have been placed in special-education classes because of the system's intolerance for alternate methods of learning. How many Einsteins do you think we have lurking in our special-education systems throughout the world's urban areas? Another section that piqued my interest is titled '13 Ways to Destroy Yourself.' In this section, he gives you exactly that. Staying angry, sacrificing sleep, getting into the wrong line of work, and ignoring your doctor are a few of the firsts. While reading, I began to place myself (and a few others I know) in a few of the self-destructive categories he listed. Certainly this information is available, but I have never seen them listed together like they are in Rap, Race and Revolution. And I have never seen them applied in such a way that I see how it is ruining our Black community. Supreme Understanding has given a gift to his people; especially the young, Black man. The author put together a guide that helps you assess your life via current and historical events, surveys, tips, and much more. The layout of the book allows you to jump from section to section without feeling disjointed and the author's passion is apparent throughout the entire book. If you are of the Hip-Hop culture, this book is a must have. If you have young, black men to raise, this book is a must read and would be great for gifting. If you are black and feel like the American dream is unreachable, read this book (as well as How To Hustle and Win). About the Author
Supreme Understanding is a community activist, educator, and expert on the socio-economical and psychological struggles of oppressed people.
Supreme received his bachelor s degree in world history from Morehouse College, followed by a master s degree in urban education from Georgia State University. At 26, he received his doctorate in education from Argosy University, where he focused his research on the benefits of non-formal education with at-risk youth and disadvantaged populations.
In 2000, Supreme co-founded Show and Prove Youth Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and empowerment of at-risk teens. In 2006, Supreme Design, LLC was incorporated to design and publish materials and literature for Show and Prove.
Supreme Understanding s work has brought him to Ghana, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, India, Japan, Thailand, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, England, the Caribbean, and dozens of cities throughout the United States. The author s travels have provided him in-depth opportunities to learn about the struggles of oppressed people throughout the world, and their similarities with the struggles of people of color in the U.S.

The known world of the First Century was not turned upside down because Yeshua-followers all believed the same thing. The inclusion of Gentiles in the plan of God and how both Jewish and Gentile Believers were to work out questions of their identity and relationship to one another in a pagan world — with opposing claims from both Jewish and Roman leadership — sparked much debate, conflict, and controversy about faith and practice. Even amidst imprisonments, rioting and personality conflicts, Dr. Luke details the influence of Ruach Hakodesh (the Holy Spirit) in all of this. In short, the faith of these early Yeshua-followers was demonstrated daily in tangible, practical ways. They fed the hungry, healed the sick, clothed the naked, invited strangers into their homes, visited prisoners, etc… Truly, when the world around them looked closely at those who said they believed the claims to deity and of messiahship from an obscure Jewish teacher from a backwater of the empire, their lives were different. The declaration of their faith wasn’t solely with words but with actions. The “Good News” was something which could be seen, felt and experienced … and the world had never seen anything like it. So radically different were those who followed this Yeshua, this Messiah (“Christ,”) that they were called the “Christ-like Ones,” or “Christians.” In the First Century, this word was understood in a biblical/Jewish context. Thus, for a Jew or Gentile to be called a Christian was connecting oneself very specifically to an active Jewish faith which recognized Yeshua as the promised/prophesied Messiah and Savior/Redeemer for Israel and the nations. Unfortunately, by the Third Century, the word Christian had completely lost its original Jewish understanding or context. Even today, the word Christian, though an endearing title to many, carries a hugely negative connotation for those of Hebrew descent and no longer effectively defines Jewish followers of Yeshua, who much prefer to be regarded as Messianic Jews. For over 40 years, Believers of Jewish descent in the Messiah have been congregating in hundreds of communities worldwide in response to the call of Ruach Hakodesh, believing it’s time to set the record straight concerning the Jewish Messiah. This book consists of a collection of my Shabbat (Sabbath) sermons based on the Book of Acts prepared and delivered to my faith community, Tree of Life, a Messianic Jewish congregation in San Diego, California several years ago. I do not consider this work by any means to be a complete exegetical commentary or a comprehensive academic analysis. Instead, this is a compilation of practical messages whose intended audience is Messianic Believers (Jewish or otherwise), and anyone curious about a Messianic Jewish perspective on Acts.

About the Author
Joel Liberman is the Messianic Rabbi of Tree of Life, a Messianic Jewish congregation in San Diego, CA. He has earned degrees from San Diego State University (B.S., Accounting), and Luther Rice University (M.Div.). Joel holds both a California CPA(inactive) and real estate broker's license, having worked in both fields for over twenty years. Rabbi Liberman is ordained through the synagogual arm of the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America (MJAA), the International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues (IAMCS), and has served on the Executive Committees of the MJAA and IAMCS continually since 2001. He and his wife Darcie reside in San Diego with their two teenage children.

An Excellent Work

An excellent work on the 1st century spread of the Gospel of Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Jesus the Messiah). As a Messianic work it gives insight that we gentiles often miss regarding the Jewish perspective of the spread and meaning of the Word and how "The way" went from a Jewish sect to a major, global faith. An easy, conversational read, written in a relaxed sermons style, I both learned more about the foundation of my faith I enjoyed it and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Looking forward to reading of the works by Joel Liberman.

Amazing Journey!

What an amazing study...taking a journey through the Book of Acts from a Jewish perspective along with actual documented church historical accounts brings the Believer in the Messiah back to a time and place of the first century perspective within the Jewish communities and how these Messianic Jews were originally perceived.

These first century Messianic Jews were in fact considered just another sect of Judaism for many years prior to being out casted from Jerusalem (to the modern day traditional Gentile Christian they were considered another denomination within Judaism). We know this from reading the Book of Acts showing they celebrated Shavuot (Pentecost) following the resurrection of Messiah and they continued to attend the appointed times (biblical holy days) at the temple and attended their local synagogues at each Shabbat (biblical Sabbath).

These Jewish Christians, the first Christians, never ceased being Jews. In fact they were very Jewish in that they continued to observe the appointed times (biblical holy days) of the L-RD and even demonstrated (when required) their Jewishness by submitting to purification rituals (Acts 21). To say they stopped being Jews is a gross misunderstanding and a complete lack of knowledge, promoted as propaganda by Gentile Replacement Theologist Christians and Rabbinical Judaism Rabbis. Nowhere in scripture has ANYONE shown me where G-D said in any prophetic message that when Messiah comes a Jew ceases being a Jew and a Gentile will become a Jew…yet throughout prophetic scripture Messiah brings salvation to all the nations!

How can this be? I challenge you to take this journey through the Book of Acts with Rabbi Joel Liberman and see for yourself how the G-D of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob fully intended to bring salvation to the Jews first and to the entire world…leaving no one out…whosoever will (Psalms 22:27; 67:1-4; 72:17-19; Isaiah 60:3-9; Romans 1:16-17; 2 Peter 3:9).

I didn't like this book. I hate when they end in cliff hangers. I also didn't like that they are now changing Faith's character. I won't be reading any more of this series.

WOW!!!!! IT'S ABOUT TO BE A MESS!

I never liked Simone and this book doesn't help her character at all. Everything about her is wrong. I never liked Darren either. There is something about him that just doesn't feel right. I'm proud of Eli for being able to not only admit his part but still be true to his convictions. No more just taking what Faith dished out. He manned up with her and it was great to see. Faith needed a kick in the butt to see that she played just as much a part in her marriage!s decline Eli did. Worth the wait!

I have been waiting for this book forever! It will be an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. I love the rich character development. I am rooting for Eli & Faith. I don't blame Faith for what happen this go around as I feel I would do the same but I'm glad she had a come to Jesus moment and actually got through this a stronger and better person. I still can't stand coconut. Can't wait for the war book! Love the visit from Scott & M and hints regarding Tony & Krista. (They need a book asap)

This fourth edition of Metric Pattern Cutting for Children’s Wear and Babywear remains the standard text book but has three majorimprovements.

First, the sections have been re-organised to reflect changes in producing and marketing children’s clothes. Today’s popularity of easy-fitting styles and knitted fabrics means that basic ‘flat’ pattern cutting is used to construct the majority of children’s wear and babywear and this type of cutting is therefore emphasised in this new edition. Shaped blocks and garments, cut to fit the body form, are still included, and are placed in chapters covering some school uniform garments or more expensive fashion or formal clothes. The book now clearly separates the sections useful to student beginners (Parts One, Two and Three), and also offers more advanced or specialist sections for students who wish to pursue a career in children’s wear or for designers working in the different manufacturing sectors of the trade.

The second change in this fourth edition is the introduction of colour coding to the sections; this makes it easier to identify specific processes in the book and enhances the illustrations.

Finally, the size charts have been revised to reflect the changes in body sizing. The clear division of the boys’ and girls’ measurements in the charts has been in response to the way clothes are marketed and to co-ordinate with European size charts. ‘Plus’ charts for heavier children have also been added.

About the Author
Winifred Aldrich is a practising fashion designer, experienced in both the industry and education, and is now working in computer-aided design in her own studio. She was previously a lecturer in Loughborough and London for 14 years and is continuing her research at The Nottingham Trent University. Her books on pattern cutting have become bestsellers.

Helpful book for making clothing patterns

This book has a very professional content. It could be considered a textbook. The price is steep,yet with the very helpful sizing charts and clear instructions for creating clothing patterns, it is worth it. There are many pattern ideas for boys and girls and plenty of how to information for creating your own designs. I would recommend this book to anyone serious about creating patterns for children. The metric sizing is no big deal, flip your measuring tape over to metric.

Amazing fit, despite the simple recipes

I would recommend this to everyone who is interessed in making childen's wear. My results were great, with hardly any fitting, and it did not take long to create the basics. And I'm only a student!

Good general reference, measurements a bit too generous.

This book is okay, helpful in so many ways but also lacking a lot. It demonstrates pattern cutting and has a wide range of body measurements. I have found the armscye to be really deep, and the shoulder is really weird when her directions are followed, and the ease is really too generous. Once you make a block with her instructions, there are still lots of alterations that need to be done for a comfortable product. Still, once I figured out the specific measurements of my target audience (mostly my own kids) the changes were easily made and marked. The instructions on creating a block were great for me to start with and practice on, and once I had hers mastered I was able to easily make my adjustments. I have found her sleeve cutting instructions to be my favorite page to flip to. A good reference, but not everything I'd hoped for.
